Further down Orange Street was the corner of Fourth Street, anchored on one side by Hopp's Pharmacy, and on the other by Vulcania's Restaurant, as shown in the above photo from the Berg Collection. Also on this block were Ideal Liquors, the Chinese laundry, a pet store, Stefanelli Plumbing, and down at the end, Belfiore's Grocery (a.k.a. "Bubbles"). As previously mentioned, Vulcania's had the first color TV in the neighborhood and the best pizza in Newark, a town that had a lot of great pie. Great smells coming from the kitchen; made the whole street smell great. Along with Van Hooton's chocolate factory, it made for a mostly fragrant neighborhood.
Bubbles Corner - my home away from the spring of 63 to around the end of 67.
Newark was something THEN. there was benny, and Ray, and big Mike, and Donnie, and John, and Mark, and Joe, and Joe, and Fred, and Lenny, and Vinny, and Chris, and Charlie, and Jay, and Bob and Dominick and George,
For those of us unfamiliar with Orange Street Pre-Rt. 280....would this be what is now the exit ramp from Rt. 280 west onto Orange Street/No. 6th at the Precinct???? That stretch to where you can get back on Rt. 280 west from Orange Street???
It is two blocks East. The North side of Orange Street
was untouched by the highway construction and Fourth and Third Street reamin. Pizza was a $1.00 back then,as were any type of pasta dinner. Only color television set in the neighborhood. A waitress named Delores was Benny's favorite. Great personality. The Suppas were real nice people. Belfiore's (Bubbles0 was sort of the first 7-11. Open to all hours of the night and they sold everything. Also wonderful people.
Great time to grow up.
Entrance ramps to 280W = First Street; Orange and Second streets
Exit ramps from 280W = Orange and Fifth streets; N. Sixth Street
Entrance ramp to 280E = Gould Place and Fifth Street

Glorious living color!
thanks for the memory! I can still see myself walking to that corner to pick up our food... my mom and my dad young and my siblings still babies..
Looking forward to seeing him Thursday for the first time since October of 2007 at his annual Italian Feast @ Rosa's Catering in Little Falls, N.J.. He resided @207 Second Street. Sussex Avenue '58, Arts H.s, 1963. Newark Police 66-91. .Introduced me to my wife October 65 on BUBBLES CORNER Third and Orange, my home away from home. . We were married 39 years Saturday. How many people can say that they were intoduced on a street corner?
living on 119 third st. the thing i was introduced too on the corner of orange n third was camels regulars for 18 cent a pack bubbles sold cigerettes to anybody but i quit on my 39 birthday i've seen bubbles many times at gulfstream race track selling tickets he sold me winners n losers big change from a pound of bolony n white american cheese lol
When you se Benny, give him my regards. He was always a good guy. I knew him from way back in the 1950s. Lost touch after he was on NPD and most moved out of the neighborhood. We played a lot of softball & stickball at the Tennis Courts in 50s & 60s. Great baseball player. Real fast!!
My Grandparents lived in that apartment building across the street from Bubbles, far left in this photo. We lived above Nason's at the time (447 Orange). Our dentist was just above Hopp's Drugs.
Ellen Nann lived in one of the buildings toward the middle of the block. That picture really brings me back.
Amazing, yep thats the place. They lived on the first floor to the right of the entrance, which is on 3rd St. We used to go to the crazy barber across on Orange St. with all the turtles and gold fish. He would feed them spaghetti, probably thought he was fooling them into believing they were worms. That guy could turn a cool guy into a dork in 10 minutes.
I will say hello to Benny tonight from everyone who knew him. Want to try and get him to a FIRST FRIDAY. Good friend of Donnie Belfiore and all the tennis courts crowd. 65 in August and overcame health issues that two members of the diner also recently did. One of the more charasmatic personalities of the old neighborhood.
He asked for Marty and Mr. Crowley and was saddened that Mr. C was no longer with us. He lives in Roseland now and still does private detective work. Overcame two serious health issues and looks great, like he was 50 and not 64. He and Detectives Spearman and Jones may be getting cash settlement from Ridley Scott after the ridiculous way they were portrayed in American Gangster..
