I'm a retired schoolteacher, now teach computer programming part-time. Here are some of my credentials:
- Master of Science degree in "Computers in Education" (36 credits).
- 30 credits above the Masters degree.
- 26 years experience as a public elementary-school teacher.
- 11 years experience teaching computer science and programming courses as a part-time adjunct at the college level.
- Taught programming courses at the college using QBasic ("Introduction to Programming"), Visual Basic 5 & 6 (beginner level); currently: Visual Basic.NET and C#.NET (beginner level). Devised curriculum for the "Introduction to Programming" course for the school.
- Also have some familiarity with Turbo Pascal for DOS, Turbo C/C++ for DOS, LogoWriter, GWBasic, and batch file programming.
- Published monthly articles in my computer users' group newsletter for over 12 years.
- Led computer workshops for staff members at each of the schools where I taught.
- Currently also teaching a programming course in Visual Basic 2005 Express to a group of members from my computer users' group.
- I am a member of several computer users' groups. I regularly attend seminars, events, and meetings in my locality in order to keep up with the latest in technology, especially programming.
Note: Main area of expertise is in education, not in computer science as there was no such thing when I was an undergraduate college student. Most of my computer and programming knowledge is self-taught. I was considered the computer expert at the elementary school when I worked there.
I took early retirement in 1996 after 26 years of teaching (not including 12 years leave-of-absence to raise my family) in a public elementary school. I immediately accepted a part-time position as computer teacher in a kindergarten-8th grade private school and signed a one-year contract. Then I received an offer to teach a computer class at a local college and accepted it. I had always wanted to teach computer classes to adults and this was my dream come true. The two part-time jobs kept me busier than my full-time job. After one year, I quit the K-8 school job and continued with the college job which I still have now.
My first computer was a Commodore 64 in 1985, but I had taken workshop courses for teachers since 1980, when I first learned BASIC on the Radio Shack TRS-80. I acquired my first IBM-compatible computer (a Packard-Bell 286) in 1989. I have a collection of old computers, books, and software all over the house.
While working towards my Master's degree, I ended up helping my fellow student-teachers with computer problems in several of the courses. I took all three of the computer language courses that were offered. My GPA was 4.0.
I really love programming. I enjoy making up new problems to solve and creating demo programs for my students. I have created thousands of programs. A very small sampling follows this post.
