Looking for information on family of my grandfather Roscoe Samuel Laws. I think his father may have been Bob Law. I would appreciate any help. I'd also love to hear from any of my cousins that might run across this.

Robert Lee Laws

HI. I hope you get this. I typed in my Grandfather's name, Robert Lee Laws, and came to the Carter-Laws Page. I loved the old pictures of Dora, Aunt Glade, and especially the close up of Roscoe because I never saw him. I heard he left years ago. It was nice to see some of my family history kept alive. Thanks.

Is this the same Otis Shelton from TN. If so, His secret first wife is my mother. He left because she was pregnant with his child and did not want his son.

Hi Marshall

Hi Marshall,
Glad to see you were here. I can only hope that someone in the family will take an interest in all of this...most of them are afraid of the computer altogether.

Progression...

by (no login)

Well, being afraid of computers certainly doesn't apply to me I just built my second one (nothing special) for me personally, and my 7th overall. No problems to date

I've got to stop by more often...it took me a year and a half to reply to this.

Take care,
Marshall

Barnett Carter

by (no login)

An earlier Barnett Carter (1737-1814) is in my direct line, too, as he also is in yours. He would be the grandfather of your great-grandfather, also named Barnett Carter. Here are the dates of the elder Barnett:

B: 1737 D:
P: Middlesex Co., Virginia P:
M: 1756
P: Middlesex Co., VA 9

D: 1814 B:
P: Henry Co., Virginia

Do you have any info on the elder Barnett? He is as far back as I have been able to prove so far.
Thanks,
Kenny Carter

Charlottesville

by (no login)

Yes, Charlottesville is definitely in the thick of it for our family. I got the document on this page on the phone from there:

The text of it is as follows:
Know all men by these presents that we Henry Carter and Jesse White are held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Virginia in the Just Sum of Fifty pounds which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves jointly and severally our joint and several heirs firmly by these presents Sealed with our seals and dated this 13th day of Dec. 1785.

The Condition of this obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage suddenly to be solemnized between the above bound Henry Carter and Sarah White now if there be no Just cause to obstruct the same then this obligation to be void otherwise to remain in force.

Test,

Nicholas Lewis Just.

If anyone reading this has any information pertaining to the parents of Winston Marshall Carter (1868-1962) of Eden (formerly Leaksville, North Carolina, USA), please e-mail me at kenny@leaksville.com.
I think his father was William Anderson Carter, who was a veteran of the War Between the States, but that's all I know...I know nothing of Winston's mother.
Thank you,
Kenny Carter
