I've reached a dead-end, brick wall, with my gg grandfather, James Franklin Carter, and am hoping someone can help.
James Franklin Carter, b. 1820, in VA. Lived in Stokes County, NC through the 1870 census, and the rest of his life in Patrick Co., VA.
Married Rebecca Pell, 1848, in Stokes, Co.
Buried in Patrick Co., 1907, in the Richard Mills/Anderson/Carter/Pigg cemetery.
Children: Walter Franklin Carter (my great-grandfather), William J., Rufus B., Emely, and Nancy Carter.
I have alot of the vital information for his descendants, but nothing of his parents. I'm hoping someone can connect me to a lead.

An earlier Barnett Carter (1737-1814) is in my direct line, too, as he also is in yours. He would be the grandfather of your great-grandfather, also named Barnett Carter. Here are the dates of the elder Barnett:
B: 1737 D:
P: Middlesex Co., Virginia P:
P: Middlesex Co., VA 9
D: 1814 B:
P: Henry Co., Virginia
Do you have any info on the elder Barnett? He is as far back as I have been able to prove so far.

Yes, Charlottesville is definitely in the thick of it for our family. I got the document on this page on the phone from there:
The text of it is as follows:
Know all men by these presents that we Henry Carter and Jesse White are held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Virginia in the Just Sum of Fifty pounds which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves jointly and severally our joint and several heirs firmly by these presents Sealed with our seals and dated this 13th day of Dec. 1785.
The Condition of this obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage suddenly to be solemnized between the above bound Henry Carter and Sarah White now if there be no Just cause to obstruct the same then this obligation to be void otherwise to remain in force.

Would like to know if this is the same Nancy Ann Carter. She dropped the Nancy and was going by Ann by 1860. Her census does not have a birthplace but her place of residence is Alexandria, Virginia if you can send me any information you have on her it would be appreciated. Her age is the same and there is also a James Carter listed on the census. Thank You.

Looking for information on family of my grandfather Roscoe Samuel Laws. I think his father may have been Bob Law. I would appreciate any help. I'd also love to hear from any of my cousins that might run across this.

HI. I hope you get this. I typed in my Grandfather's name, Robert Lee Laws, and came to the Carter-Laws Page. I loved the old pictures of Dora, Aunt Glade, and especially the close up of Roscoe because I never saw him. I heard he left years ago. It was nice to see some of my family history kept alive. Thanks.

I just thought that I would make a quick post since there hasn't been one in what seems like quite some time Unfortunately, there have been no new additions to the family to report (if you know me you know of which I speak), but maybe soon Take it easy folks.
If anyone reading this has any information pertaining to the parents of Winston Marshall Carter (1868-1962) of Eden (formerly Leaksville, North Carolina, USA), please e-mail me at email@example.com.
I think his father was William Anderson Carter, who was a veteran of the War Between the States, but that's all I know...I know nothing of Winston's mother.

Dear Kenny, My mother is a Carter, there is a VERY BIG history of the names William and ANDERSON in our family, who originated from NC. But left there late 1700's and early 1800's.. Do you have any early family history of your Carter's? i.e., names, dates, places of birth, etc.? M.Stuart
