My husband fell and broke his hip last week. He needed hip replacement surgery and is now recuperating in a rehab center.

Unfortunately, he's not doing very well.

My husband is 81 and a diabetic. He had a setback and is back in the hospital, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia.

He was admitted last night (about 7 PM) from the rehab center, but there was no bed available for him, and as of this morning (it's now 12 noon) he's still in the ER waiting for a room.

I hadn't eaten anything except an apple since breakfast yesterday. Came home, leaving my husband in the ER, and had last night's supper at 5AM this morning. Then went to bed for a couple of hours.

More bad news.

November 6 2007, 11:50 PM

My husband had a stroke a few days ago while he was in the hospital. Fortunately they caught it in time and he is getting medication that reversed the effects of the stroke so he is recovering now. I still don't know when he'll be transferred back to the rehab center.

This morning, the contractor started reconstruction of my basement, which had to be demolished 2 months ago following sewage backup. We still have stuff sitting out in the back yard exposed to the weather, waiting for the basement to be finished. The rest of the house is extremely cluttered with more stuff we had to bring up from the basement.

My son also has some serious health issues and will soon be needing surgery.

All this is going on and I still have to prepare for the course I'm teaching. You might say I've been a bit stressed out.

PS: My husband spent 24 1/2 hours waiting in the ER last week before a room became available for him.

Update on the situation at home

November 30 2007, 5:21 PM

Thanks to all who responded for your good wishes.

My husband is back in the rehab center as of two weeks ago. He is slowly recovering and has now started using a walker, but he's still very weak and his balance is poor. It will be several more weeks before he's ready to be released. He needs to be able to climb up a flight of stairs to get to the bedroom and bathroom in our house. There's none on the main floor. We may have to install another banister. I visit him every day.

Meanwhile, the basement is only about half done. They keep promising that it will be finished by the end of the week, but that was two weeks ago. The house is more cluttered than ever. Stuff is still sitting out in the back yard and the weather forecast is for snow and sleet on Sunday. The snow shovels are out in the garage and I will need to bring them into the house. (Once it snows, there's no way to get to the garage or open the door without a lot of shovelling first.) I usually keep them in the basement, but that's not possible now.
