Response to James Chapter 2 (Con't.)

2:6. "But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?"

These were treating the poor disrespectfully, while treating the rich who in turn were abusive toward them with favoritism.

Oppress: This is better understood as "to tyrannize, to exercise harsh control over another; to use one's power against another."

Judgment seats. This refers to the civil courts of the day.

"Some bring God's curse on them by marking off part of the Bible, calling it erroneous, uninspired, less than the very Word of God." - Dr. John R. Rice

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God to salvation to every one that believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." (Romans 1:16)
