Saved by the Blood
The blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you. (Exodus 12:13)
Instructions given Israel on how to escape the judgment of the death of the firstborn (which was the last plague upon Egypt before Israel was permitted to leave the land) focused on the blood of the lamb. It is all a great picture of the Gospel. In fact, few verses in the Bible illustrate the Gospel better than the verse before us on the blood. Three great truths about the blood and salvation are illustrated in this verse. They are the prominence of the blood, the protection by the blood, and the place of the blood.
Prominence of the blood. The emphasis in our verse is on the blood. The blood of the lamb is the prominent theme. The message of the blood in regards to salvation is prominent throughout the Scripture. From the curse on Cains bloodless offering, to the emphasis of the blood making atonement for sin in Israels offerings (Leviticus 17:11), to the warning in the New Testament that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins (Hebrews 9:22), to Revelation which speaks of the blood of the Lamb (Revelation 12:11), there is a continual emphasis on the blood in salvation.
Protection by the blood. When I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you. Plainly, the blood was the protection. God was not looking for fame or fortune but for the blood. It mattered not what the popularity or position of the people were, what mattered is were they protected by the blood. Likewise in the matter of salvation, it makes no difference what you are in this world. What matters is whether or not your sins have been washed away by the blood of Christ.
Place of the blood. The blood shall be to you for a token upon the house where ye are. The blood had to be on your house if you were to be protected. Being on a neighbors house did not help you. Others may be saved, but that does not save you. Unless you personally put your faith in Jesus Christ for salvation, you will not be spared eternal death.
