Woman 97 Gets Ride on a Harley
by
The Other Pat Murphy
Woman, 97, gets ride on Harley
By Bob Petrie • Sheboygan Press staff • September 12, 2009
At age 97, Catherine Westover has been around nearly as long as her favorite motorcycle, the Harley-Davidson.
So when the Sheboygan woman was given the opportunity to actually ride on a Harley, she was thrilled — and a touch nervous — to get the chance.
"I hung on for dear life," said Westover, a resident at Terrace Estates, who last Sunday went for her first motorcycle ride since she was a teenager, a trip on a 2006 Harley Trike to North Point Park to look out over Lake Michigan.
The ride came courtesy of a neighbor, Karen Even-Pantel, who owns the Harley and heard about Westover's love for the Harley brand.
"I can't believe she's 97," said Even-Pantel, who at age 67 got her own motorcycle license just seven years ago. "At that age, that's so cool. She's so on top of it."
Westover, who goes by the nickname, Kay, was a bit puzzled when she was placed on the motorcycle, helmet on head. Kay wanted to hold onto the driver during the ride, but was instead directed to use a pair of handles attached to the bike, "down by your butt."
"You don't hang onto the driver," she said. "I thought I'd feel safer. She (Even-Pantel) said, 'Pinch me if you're scared.' … No, I didn't pinch her."
The two, accompanied by a few other motorcycles, left Terrace Estates and headed east on Eisner Avenue — "it was plenty bumpy," Westover said — and they turned south onto Eighth Street and east on North Avenue, toward the lakefront.
When they stopped at the overlook, Westover was amazed at the view.
"The lake was beautiful that day," she said.
Westover, a 40-plus year resident of Sheboygan who drove a car up until last year, actually asked for a real Harley this past Christmas from her daughter-in-law, Dee Watson, who lives in Florida.
Instead, Kay received two red Harley toy replicas that make revving noises, which she keeps in her apartment. A grandson also mailed her a big blanket with the Harley logo.
A few months later, Even-Pantel said she was outside in her front yard, across from Terrace Estates, when Westover came by and said, "When can we go for a ride?"
"She was so excited," Even-Pantel said, and the arrangements were made.
Sunday's Harley ride was a lot different than the last time Westover was a passenger on a motorcycle. That happened way back when she was a teenager in Grand Haven, Mich., when a young man she called a friend gave her a lift home.
As Kay recalled, her father was none too thrilled to see his daughter on the back of a motorcycle, and at night.
"At 11 o'clock, he drove (us) up to the front door … and my father turned the porch light on and came out in his long underwear and said, 'Don't ever take my daughter on that contraption again!"
Roughly 80 years later, Kay's experience of riding a Harley was a whole lot more exciting.
"The best thing? The best thing was getting the ride."

Amen Brother
by dude in the shadows
Never knew your politics brother and never knew YOU ... but as I compromise my machine to speak to you I say this: a man lives and breathes by and is judged by what he did ... Brother if you sinned I think you repent ... I don't thump any bibles but I know the Lord (he don't thump bibles either) ... I think you know the Lord too like I do (and you know what I'm saying man!!)... I speak like the good Kris Kristoferson did, just to give you a flavor of who I am ...now THAT man had some good words and I think he knew who he was ... he spoke a truth we know ... Can I say this man?? ... thank you for being there ... for the space you gave to the lonely rider, travelling on the backroads, seeking no one ... seeing no one ... just riding and trying to survive ...
These days I feel a bit of life in me but I can look back to some bad times, when I was some dude in the shadows, with nothing to offer anyone except trouble ... but I'm here now and sometimes pessimism gets the better of me and I don't have much good to say ... but other times what I'm about to do ... quitting my job and going back home ... makes me free even if I lose everything ...
I see Texas on your name man ... so you know the prairie ... 883 is me ... quite a bit north of you ... I'll be ... and I'll help where I can ... and I'll cruise my mountains when I miss 'em ... but mostly I'll just ride those prairie highways and do what I can to live a good life in my prairie home ... Live man, and make the Good call ...
Ride on brother ...
Ride on ...

For a free place to stash images for use on the web unless you want to stash them in a directory where your web site is hosted like I do you can always go to
http://photobucket.com/
and set up an account, they have different setting for privacy and what have you. Just upload some and mess around with it a bit, it'll give you choices for different size files and what have you. Keep those over whelmed at the other board from having strokes if you load up a huge file, choices are nice.
Just mess with it, it's free and pretty user friendly

But I've noticed with this board when you insert the image tag you still need to put the quotes mark on the link for some reason
like thus with ' taking the place of < and > otherwise it wouldn't show up in this example
'img src="http://fourspeed.net/someimage.jpg"'
Make sense?
Normally img tag wouldn't need the quotes, not sure why here........give it a try

Settled in...
by Wild Bill
We settled on a new house along 41 near I-75 south of Lake City. On the Google map it shows a place called "Mason City" and I am right in it. Nice little house but we are having a lot of issues with it. Leaking roof, tile cracking and stuff. Oh well. We'll get it all ironed out in time. It has a builder warranty, but they really don't want to fix it right, so I may be in for a fight.
We really like it there. Terri can get up and walk around without any pain in the morning. It's great. The cold was begining to take its toll on her so we had to do something. Glad we did.
I picked up an 02 Heritage with a little under 10K miles on it just in time to make it to Daytona Bike Week. I didn't have much time because I had to fly back up to Alaska the next day, but it was all good. We've been putting a lot of miles on the bike. It feels great to get down there from here in Kuparuk. I work north of the arctic circle, it is a very cold place in the winter.
I'm spending my next break here in Alaska at Wasilla. Terri is joining me and we will be seeing the kids. I keep a pick up truck, rifles and clothes here along with a few other things. It will be nice to stay up here for a change and visit with the kids and such. We have some business to attend to as well.
I cleaned up
Wild Bill's Culture Corner
a bit over the last few nights. I uploaded some pictures of the house and the bike in Daytona onto the blog I maintain there. I hope to upload some shots of Kuparuk and the wildlife here. It is a marvelous place! Some of the work done here is nothing short of miraculous. The wild life is everywhere and has increased considerably since the area saw oil development.
Anyway, all is well.
Later,
Wild Bill

Those bogus scams have been going on forever. They must work as they continue to this day to keep sending out millions of eMails such as what you have to people. Used to be a dozen or more claiming to be PayPal coming in daily to my various eMails, but they'll use whatever they think will draw someone to click. You'll usually get what looks to be a legitimate page and if you fill in your information, well you're screwed. Banks and businesses don't send out requests like that and most will warn you on their websites not to fall prey to such tactics. Best rule of thumb when dealing with your online accounts is to enter the URL yourself, never click on a link in an eMail. Never.
In the field of computer security, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites (YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, Windows Live Messenger), auction sites (eBay), online banks (Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Chase), online payment processors (PayPal), or IT Administrators (Yahoo, ISPs, corporate) are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting. Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail or instant messaging,[1] and it often directs users to enter details at a fake website whose look and feel are almost identical to the legitimate one. Even when using server authentication, it may require skill to detect that the website is fake. Phishing is an example of social engineering techniques used to fool users,[2] and exploits the poor usability of current web security technologies.[3] Attempts to deal with the growing number of reported phishing incidents include legislation, user training, public awareness, and technical security measures.
A phishing technique was described in detail in 1987, and the first recorded use of the term "phishing" was made in 1996. The term is a variant of fishing,[4] probably influenced by phreaking,[5][6] and alludes to baits used to "catch" financial information and passwords.

Watch a live video, share your PC with CNN
Brian Livingston By Brian Livingston
Many people who watched live streaming video of the inauguration of U.S. President Barack Obama on Jan. 20 may not realize that their PC was used to send the video to other PCs, too.
Clicking "yes" to a CNN.com dialog box installed a peer-to-peer (P2P) application that uses your Internet bandwidth rather than CNN's to send live video to other viewers.
The P2P application is called Octoshape Grid Delivery and is managed by Octoshape ApS, a company based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Web surfers who visit CNN.com and select a live video stream for the first time see in their browsers a dialog box, shown in Figure 1, saying, "This site requires the Octoshape Grid Delivery enhancement for Adobe Flash Player." The dialog box doesn't appear when playing an ordinary video file, only when starting a live feed. (Feeds labeled LIVE typically appear in the upper-right corner of CNN.com's home page during business hours.)
CNN Octoshape dialog box
Figure 1. Users who select a CNN.com live video feed see a dialog box to install the Octoshape Grid Delivery application.
According to Octoshape's end-user license agreement (EULA), what's installed is a peer-to-peer app that will "deliver parts of the video and audio stream to other end users of the Software."
Why should you care? Windows Secrets contributing editor Ryan Russell, using a network sniffer, measured Octoshape using upstream bandwidth of 320 kilobits per second on a broadband connection. Dan Ferrell, in a comment on contributing editor Susan Bradley's blog, reports seeing 600 Kbps of upstream traffic. At first glance, Ferrell adds, the multiple connections to his PC looked on his security alert system like some kind of SQL attack.
The Internet Storm Center, an Internet security organization, reported that traffic on Jan. 20 had jumped to a level thousands of times higher than usual on port 8247, which is used for UDP, the User Datagram Protocol. (See Figure 2.) The center quickly identified the source as legitimate CNN but security consultant Raul Siles warned in his report, "It would be easy for an attacker to hide his actions on this port if we simply ignore it."
ISC Octoshape UDP traffic
Figure 2. The Internet Storm Center measured an enormous increase in UDP traffic on Jan. 20.
In a telephone interview, Octoshape's P2P nature was confirmed by Mike Wise, group technical advisor for platform R&D at Turner Broadcasting System, the parent of CNN.
Wise emphasized that the news network had selected the most considerate software for the job: "The Octoshape technology uses a congestion control mechanism that's less aggressive than TCP and most UDP implementations." As one example of the way Octoshape gives priority to user tasks, he explained, "we chose an implementation that wouldn't interfere with consumer's VoIP [Voice over Internet Protocol] applications."
As a European company, Octoshape's technology was initially used on the continent to stream live feeds of such high-profile events as the Eurovision Song Contest and the UEFA Cup. "We're their first big United States customer, as least that I know of," says Wise.
"We did some limited trials leading up to the election" on Nov. 4, as Wise describes it. The big test came with the Jan. 20 inaugural address. More than 26 million live feeds (including restarts of crashed streams) were served that day by CNN.com, according to a Jan. 25 article and chart in the New York Times. CNN's nearest rivals served "only" 9.1 million (MSNBC) and 8 million (AP).
To my surprise, I've seen only a few blogs comment on the implications of CNN using so much upstream bandwidth and almost no headlines in the mainstream U.S. media.
Most Internet service providers support far less bandwidth in the upstream direction (from a PC to the Internet) than they do downstream (from the Internet to a PC). But that isn't the only concern with CNN's use of people's Internet connections:
* Deceptive marketing. Octoshape's dialog box warns that playing a live video "requires" installing new software. Despite this, however, if you click "no" to Octoshape, you can play the feed using the streaming video capability built into Windows Media Player or Adobe's Flash Player, although possibly with less fidelity. Small links to choose one of the two standard formats appear in the bottom-right corner of the playback window.
The Octoshape EULA doesn't become available until after the user is required to select "yes" or "no" to install the app. But even if the EULA appeared before the buttons, burying in legalese the commandeering of a person's PC isn't my idea of "informed consent." Only a clear explanation of the repurposing of a PC's bandwidth in on-screen text, readable without scrolling is an adequate way to inform users of such a technique.
* Cost-shifting to ISPs. CNN's use of Octoshape might make live feeds look somewhat smoother to end users, but the primary benefit is a reduction in cost to the cable news network.
The TorrentFreak blog cites an unnamed insider as saying 30% of CNN's live feed traffic was served from individual PCs and not the network's own servers. That saves CNN big time on bandwidth. But the cost doesn't just disappear it's shifted to ISPs.
Brett Glass, the owner of Lariat.net, a small ISP in Laramie, Wyoming, testified before the FCC last year on cost-shifting. Bandwidth, he explains, can cost hundreds of dollars per Mbps per month to providers in rural areas like his. "CNN is setting up a server on the ISP's network without permission or compensation," he told me in an interview. "CNN's not a charity, in fact it's doing a lot better than some ISPs."
* Costs to end users. Many ISPs around the world restrict how much bandwidth users can consume. Those providers charge by the megabyte for any traffic above that level. Users who installed Octoshape's app and served traffic upstream as well as down may get an unpleasant surprise in their next monthly bill. Octoshape anticipated this in the company's EULA by saying, "You are responsible for any telecommunication or other connectivity charges incurred through the use of the Software."
In addition, ISP terms of service usually prohibit customers from using their Internet connection to host a server. The FCC ruled last year against Comcast, a major U.S. ISP, on peer-to-peer restrictions, as explained in an Ars Technica article. But other legal issues on home-grown servers remain unsettled.
(In an interview, Comcast spokeswoman Jenny Moyer declined to address CNN's use of Octoshape, saying, "I don't think it's anything we're going to be able to comment on at this time.")
* Ludicrous license terms. Anyone who reads Octoshape's EULA after clicking "yes" to install the app finds that they've agreed to some hilarious prohibitions:
"You may not collect any information about communication in the network of computers that are operating the Software or about the other users of the Software by monitoring, interdicting or intercepting any process of the Software. Octoshape recognizes that firewalls and anti-virus applications can collect such information, in which case you not are allowed to use or distribute such information."
* Company policies on outbound traffic. No one has suggested that Octoshape is doing anything other than relaying live video streams to other PCs. In a blog comment, Johan Ryman, Octoshape manager of strategic partnership and sales, assures users that the app is well-behaved and stops consuming upstream bandwidth within five seconds of a live stream being closed.
Many companies, however, have policies against sending data outside their LAN. How many CIOs will be comfortable with an app that sends unknown information to random PCs?
* Use of Flash's install mechanism. Octoshape is the only outside company that's allowed to download software using the Adobe Flash Player's so-called Express Install feature, according to a Flash Magazine technical analysis. Express Install is used by Adobe to push updates and other software, such as Acrobat Connect and the Adobe AIR runtime.
IT admins who'd like to turn off the installation of Octoshape within their companies could disable Flash's update mechanism, as explained in Adobe TechNote 16701594. But doing so would disable all auto-updates from Adobe, not just Octoshape.
* Security vulnerabilities. The Octoshape app is supported by an established company and is not any kind of virus or worm. However, most programs have bugs, and Octoshape specifically communicates with its own servers and other PCs in ways that are not apparent to end users.
Any Web site you visit that is "Octoshape aware" can invoke the application. If a security vulnerability is discovered in the Octoshape software, hackers could exploit the weakness.
Media players expose PC users to serious security flaws more often than Windows itself does, as WS associate editor Scott Dunn reported on Aug. 16, 2007. For instance, several new vulnerabilities were discovered in Flash Player version 9 in 2008 alone, including one rated "highly critical," according to advisories by the security firm Secunia.
In a follow-up article on Sept. 6, 2007, Scott reported that Flash Player 9 was found to be unpatched in 62% of the Windows PCs that participated in a test. End users can correct these holes by patching the player or upgrading to version 10, but too few do so.
* Corporate revolving doors. It's remarkable to see how a small company in Denmark has managed to gain exclusive contracts with Adobe and CNN. I'm all for innovative software firms selling cutting-edge technology.
At the same time, I wonder how these relationships came into being. Last month, Octoshape hired as its new U.S. CEO Scott Brown, previously a vice president of Turner Broadcasting, according to the Business of Video blog. Sounds like the connection between CNN and Octoshape is getting stronger all the time.
The question isn't whether peer-to-peer technology is "good" or "bad." P2P is here to stay.
But if all TV programs are going to be streamed live by media giants, as I'm sure will eventually happen, the question is what impact this will have on Internet bandwidth and who will pay for it.
I'd like to see the computer industry start a well-publicized discussion in the major news media about this. If we're going to stream TV across the Internet, shouldn't we select an open standard (the TorrentFreak blog likes P2P-Next), rather than proprietary technology that's restricted to a few parties with patents?
What to do if you have Octoshape on your PC
As I mentioned earlier, the Octoshape app isn't currently a threat. But I personally would rather put up with a slightly jerky video than run an application on my PC that's sending God-knows-what to who-knows-whom.
Fortunately, the Octoshape program isn't hard to find or remove:
* Step 1. To find out whether the Octoshape app is running, you can use Windows' built-in Task Manager. (Right-click a blank space on the Task Bar, and then click Task Manager.)
As Susan Bradley shows in a blog post, when you're viewing a live stream from CNN.com, you'll see in Task Manager a service called octoshape.exe. (In the illustration on her blog, instances of the service are shown to be consuming 63MB of RAM, but a lot of this memory may be taken up by the Flash Player itself.)
* Step 2. To remove Octoshape's app, you can use the Control Panel in either Windows XP or Vista. In XP, the applet is called Add or Remove Programs. In Vista, it's Programs and Features. The "Octoshape add-in for Adobe Flash Player" is the name of the program to uninstall.
Strangely, there isn't an uninstaller for the Mac version of the app. You have to manually delete the Octoshape folder.
These removal procedures are explained in detail at the bottom of the Octoshape Grid Delivery FAQ.
There's much more to write on this subject, but I'll stop here. If you have additional specifics on any of this, please send a tip via the Windows Secrets contact page. Thanks!

Fines fraud hits Italian drivers
By Duncan Kennedy
BBC News, Rome
Thousands of drivers in Italy are expected to seek compensation after it was revealed that a system to catch them jumping red lights was rigged.
More than 100 people, including police officers, are being investigated as part of the fraud.
The T-Redspeed system - a revolutionary camera technology - has been in use for two years in 300 areas across Italy.
Cameras linked to traffic lights capture 3-d images of vehicles if they jump the lights or are speeding.
It can also detect offences like illegal u-turns.
Fraudulent fines
It is believed more than a million drivers have been trapped by the system.
But it is now claimed the lights were rigged to change from yellow to red in three seconds instead of the regulation five or six seconds.
The fraud was uncovered by a senior police officer who noticed an unusually high number of fines being issued.
Instead of an average 15 fines a day in some places, the figure jumped to more than 1,000.
The fraud may have netted as much as $170m (£116.4m) for those involved.
The scheme's inventor is now under house arrest, though his lawyers say he is innocent.
More than 100 other people including 63 police commanders are also being investigated as part of the scam.

its the easy way to steal the scratch without a human witness. However if you suspect this shit is going on, there is federal regulation about light timing:
this is the federal specification for yellow change light timing:
16. Q: The MUTCD specifies that the duration of the yellow change interval should be between 3 and 6 seconds. How is the actual length determined for a given intersection?
A: Within this 3 to 6 second range recommended by Section 4D.10 of the MUTCD, jurisdictions are free to set yellow change interval timing based on their own policies or studies. ITE has published guidelines for determining the length of yellow and all-red intervals. (Visit ITE's website at www.ite.org where you will find additional information under "Technical Information".) Those ITE guidelines utilize scientifically derived formulas based on engineering principles and years of research. The yellow change interval is calculated based on speed of approaching vehicles, the stopping ability of approaching vehicles, and the width of the intersection. The ITE guidelines are used by many jurisdictions as the basis of either the overall policies or the individual intersection timings for yellow change intervals. Because vehicle laws vary by State and conditions vary by intersection, the engineer must exercise judgment in deciding on the length of the yellow interval.

XP deadline extended

XP deadline extended toward launch of Windows 7
By Dennis O'Reilly
Microsoft has acknowledged that it will allow system builders to pay for installed copies of XP through May 30, rather than shutting down the pipeline this month.
If you order from your preferred vendor by Jan. 31, you may be able to rely on XP for new systems almost right up until the long-awaited Windows 7 ships, an event that's expected to occur within a few months.
Vista is looking more and more like the Edsel of the computer industry. Presumably as a result of slow uptake by corporations and individual users, Microsoft last month confirmed that it will allow OEMs and smaller-scale "system builders" to pay as late as May 30, 2009, for copies of XP ordered by Jan. 31. (Vendors won't have to pay Microsoft until the systems sell. MS previously had been expecting payments for copies of XP by Jan. 31.)
The details of Microsoft's new, flexible inventory program were first reported on the ChannelWeb site.
Combine this news with reports that Windows 7 may ship as early as mid-2009, and it looks like Microsoft is ready to relegate Vista to the binary scrapheap. Maybe the company's recent $300 million marketing push for Vista wasn't so successful as Microsoft claims it was.
As Mary Jo Foley states in her All About Microsoft blog, vendors of low-budget PCs such as netbooks were already being allowed to sell new systems based on XP through June 30, 2010, or one year after Windows 7 ships whichever came first. Microsoft's new policy now gives a reprieve to builders of mainstream computers, and to end users who want to buy systems running Windows XP, not Vista, indefinitely or until Windows 7 is a proven commodity.
Will the Windows 7 RTM make an early entrance?
The official release of Beta 1 of Windows 7 to the public is widely expected to occur next week. If all goes well with the remaining testing, indications are that the final, RTM (released to manufacturing) version will be available as early as August. Lending support to this theory is the fact that the end-user license agreement of Beta 1, like all recent prerelease versions of Windows 7, states that the software will expire Aug. 1, 2009.
This feature as well as the use of the product's built-in slmgr -rearm command to extend the beta's trial period without an activation key was recently explained by Marius Oiaga of Softpedia. Other sources predict that Windows 7 won't ship to OEMs until October 2009, becoming available to end users the following month.
Early reviews of the Windows 7 beta, such as those summarized by the Telegraph of London, variously describe the new operating system as being not much different from Vista or representing an unspectacular-but-solid improvement. If Windows 7 turns out to have better performance and reliability than Vista, as some reviewers believe, the OS may gain a measure of relieved acceptance from end users after only a few months on the market.
Paying a premium to downgrade from Vista to XP
The extended availability of XP on new PCs will gladden the hearts of many Windows users. For a few unfortunates, however, the XP option is coming at great cost.
Eric Krangel reports on the Silicon Alley Insider blog that Dell has gradually been inflating its surcharge for "downgrading" a PC from Vista to XP. The bite rose last June from U.S. $20 to $50, then spiked in October to $100, and now is a whopping $150.
The fact that Dell's customers appear to be willing to pay this amount or more to avoid Vista may be the greatest indictment of Microsoft's unloved OS.
The reality is that the Redmond software giant has been forced by popular opinion to provide customers with a Vista-free option an extended life for XP more than two years after Vista's rollout. Depending on your point of view, this concession can be interpreted negatively as an act of desperation or more positively as a burst of marketing acumen on the company's part.
As usual, the truth is likely somewhere in between.

two of my three sisters are lesbians, one by birth, the other by marriage.
Noel (or noël, sometimes spelled nowell for the English pronunciation) refers either to the Christmas celebration or a Christmas carol. The word comes from the French word Noël meaning "Christmas" which derives from the Old French word noël, a variant of nael. The Latin origin is the word natalis ("birth"). OR:

Microsoft patches IE, but Firefox is still safer
by 4sp
By Mark Joseph Edwards
Microsoft recently announced that a special, out-of-cycle patch would be released on Dec. 17 for Internet Explorer's latest security vulnerability, the so-called XML exploit.
If you'd like to avoid similar weaknesses that are certain to be discovered in IE in the future, the simple solution is to use a different browser, such as Firefox, with a few easy customizations that allow you to switch to Microsoft's browser only for sites that absolutely require IE.
If you haven't yet patched IE to protect against the XML exploit, visit Microsoft's December 2008 security advisory. This Web page, which began as an announcement of the Redmond company's planned patch, changes automatically to information about installing the patch as soon as the fix is released.
WS contributing editor Susan Bradley reported on the dangerous zero-day exploit in her Dec. 11 Patch Watch column (paid content). The security hole affects many different builds of IE 5, 6, and 7 as well as the beta version of IE 8. Every recent version of Microsoft's operating system is potentially affected: Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Server 2003, and Server 2008.
The Redmond software giant acknowledged on Dec. 16 that more than two million Windows users had already become infected via the IE flaw, according to an article by the Press Association. How many more people will get hit before the patch is widely distributed is anyone's guess.
Microsoft published a security advisory on Dec. 10, listing nine potential workarounds, before the patch became available. Many people, myself included, felt that the explanation did a poor job of clarifying which combination of fixes a particular user should implement. The company's Security Vulnerability Research and Defense blog attempted to clarify matters on Dec. 12. But the information there still left most people wondering how to determine the best combination of workarounds for their systems.
IE zero-day flaws cry out for switch to Firefox
There's no easy way to secure IE against similar flaws that will inevitably be discovered and used by hackers to their advantage in the future. For this reason and in response to pleas for help by many Windows Secrets readers here's my recommendation on the best way to surf the Web more securely:
* Step 1: Switch to Firefox, Opera, Chrome, or another contender and configure it to be your default browser. Use IE only to visit sites that require Microsoft-specific technology probably because they rely on ActiveX to function. (For example, you need to use IE to download patches at the Windows Update site.) I recommend Firefox because of the numerous add-ons available for that browser, some of which I describe in Steps 2 and 3.
* Step 2: Install the Firefox add-ons known as User Agent Switcher (see UAS's download page) and IE Tab (download page).
User Agent Switcher lets you change your browser's identity. If a Web site demands the use of IE but actually works fine with other browsers, you can change the name of the operating system and browser the site thinks you're using. Many "IE only" sites render perfectly well in Firefox and other browsers.
IE Tab lets you open a site in a new Firefox tab that's driven by IE's rendering engine. This allows sites requiring ActiveX or other IE-only components to work in the same way they do in IE itself.
Unfortunately, using the IE rendering engine in a Firefox tab leaves your PC just as susceptible as it would be if you'd opened an IE window in the first place. Use this technique with caution and only with sites you feel are very unlikely to be hacked, such as Microsoft.com.
* Step 3: For added security, install the NoScript plug-in, which disables JavaScript, Flash, Silverlight, and other "active content" (see NoScript's download page). Because most Web sites of any complexity use JavaScript for menus and other functions, place in the utility's "whitelists" sites such as Microsoft.com and WindowsSecrets.com that are unlikely to try to run malicious scripts on you.
WS associate editor Scott Dunn wrote more about NoScript and other Firefox security add-ons in his Apr. 17, 2008, lead story.
* Step 4: Open an Internet Explorer window and set the security level of IE's Internet zone to High. To do this, click Tools, Internet Options, Security. Choose the Internet zone in the box at the top of the dialog and move the slider control below it to High. Note that this setting will cause many sites you haven't added to IE's Trusted Sites zone to render incorrectly or display error messages.
* Step 5: If for some reason you can't install Microsoft's Dec. 17 IE patch, refer to Microsoft's Dec. 10 and Dec. 12 advisories for workarounds, as I mentioned above. The latter page, for example, describes how to adjust Access Control Lists by using Registry scripts in an oledb32.zip file you can download from Microsoft. (The download link is at the end of that page.)
Be aware that some of the workarounds Microsoft recommends can have unexpected side-effects. For example, a comment posted by the Internet Storm Center on Dec. 16 stated that Microsoft's "Disable XML Island" workaround prevents users from sending e-mail using Exchange 2003 and Outlook Web Access.
If you need any more evidence that weaknesses in IE can be rapidly used by hackers, take a look at a wiki page provided by the Shadowserver Foundation, a security group that lists sites known to be infecting unsuspecting visitors. IMPORTANT: Do not visit any of the sites on the list, even if you think your browser is secure these sites are or were infectious.
The point is that thousands of sites became carriers within days. (The Press Association quotes Trend Micro as saying more than 10,000 sites were compromised by Dec. 16.) If you use a URL filtering system or block list, you should add the sites cited by Shadowserver to prevent access at least until all your machines are patched or a specific site is proved to be clean.

My wife Terri and I sold our home in Alaska and we are buying a house in Florida. I'll continue to maintain my Alaska residency but will spend more and more time south. I now work on the North Slope and will commute to Florida from Alaska on a 2 week on and 2 week off schedule. We love Alaska but there are now health concerns that overshadow other wishes.
We put in an offer on a rather nice 2100 sq ft house with 5 acres and a pool just outside of Lake City. We will know more later today, but if we do not buy that house there are others. I sold the bike up here and will buy another in Florida after we get settled in. Making a move from Alaska to Florida is expensive and unsettling, but I think it will be worth it in the long run. I look forward to the prolonged riding season and other opportunities the "lower forty-eight" states bring. Who knows, moving south I may even get to meet a few of you after all these many years.
Later,
Wild Bill

Was wondering though why FL. Damn humid there. Most go to NM or AZ For the dry climent and still have year round putting. The cost of living is much lower in AZ also. Plus there are a couple of grate prople in that neck of the woods and just a short trip to you also. My docs told mr I would be better off in a drier clim. but my head aches are so much worse in the heat that I have chosen to stay in the cool damp NW.

this has been called God's waiting room and when you see all the blue hairs and Q-tips you'll know why LRH
m,self I like it here, I like the Ocean the fishin the bikinis the keys and the year round ridin no snow sleet or ice storms etc... theys a bunch a things I don't like, hurricanes tornadoes corrupt poloticks terrible drivers overzealous cops no Mts etc ... lots a states has them thangs so we is not unique ... unfortunately Lake City is in the middle of nowheresville hours from the ocean or the gulf best part of that may be gettin spared at hurricane time but still no guarantees ... I live here cause I got sick of shovlin snow and shitty weather all the time ...
but here is the real rule of thumb ...
If you think you might not like livin in Florida you prolly won't ... Best of luck Wild Bill and if you do move to Lake City let me know we pass thru there every year on our way to the smokies maybe you'd like to ride along

Virus: UPS/FedEx Delivery Failure Snopes page

UPS/FedEx Delivery Failure
Virus: UPS/FedEx Delivery Failure
REAL VIRUS
Examples:
[Collected via e-mail, July 2008]
From: UPS Packet Service
Subject: UPS Paket N0328795951
Dear Sir/Madam,
Unfortunately we were not able to deliver postal package you sent on July the 1st in time because the recipient's address is not correct.
Please print out the invoice copy attached and collect the package at our office.
Your UPS
[Collected via e-mail, August 2008]
Unfortunately we were not able to deliver postal package you sent on July the 25 in time because the recipient's address is not correct.
Please print out the invoice copy attached and collect the package at our office.
Your FEDEX
www.fedex.com
Origins: A common (and unfortunately, effective) technique for luring e-mail users into opening virus-launching attachments is to send messages that would appear to be relevant or important to many of their potential
recipients. One way of accomplishing this feat is to make the virus-carrying messages appear to come from some type of business entity that many people commonly deal with, such as one of the large Internet auction or retailing sites, or a national bank (or other financial institution), or a major provider of a common service.
That last area was in play in July 2008, when e-mail users experienced the onset of a virus spread through messages purporting to come from the United Parcel Service (UPS) or Federal Express (FedEx) parcel delivery companies. The bogus messages informed users about packages they had supposedly sent that could not be delivered due to incorrect recipient addresses and invited them to open and print out attached invoices in order to claim the undelivered packages at UPS offices. The messages included a file attachment called 'ups_invoice.zip' which actually harbored a malicious executable file called 'ups_invoice.exe', but the attachment displayed a Microsoft Word icon to make it appear like a harmless Word document and thereby lure recipients into clicking on it.
A mass mailing of this type was bound to hit quite a few people who had shipped something via UPS in the recent past and therefore might easily be lured into opening the virus-launching attachment, and UPS was quick to put up (and e-mail) a warning about the malicious messages:
Attention Virus Warning
Service Update
We have become aware there is a fraudulent email being sent that says it is coming from UPS and leads the reader to believe that a UPS shipment could not be delivered. The reader is advised to open an attachment reportedly containing a waybill for the shipment to be picked up.
This email attachment contains a virus. We recommend that you do not open the attachment, but delete the email immediately.
UPS may send official notification messages on occasion, but they rarely include attachments. If you receive a notification message that includes an attachment and are in doubt about its authenticity, please contact customerservice@ups.com.
Please note that UPS takes its customer relationships very seriously, but cannot take responsibility for the unauthorized actions of third parties.
Thank you for your attention.

but....month ago 2 gay chics knock at my winnebago door ,ask if land is for sale,i ask how they found it,,after all it is a 1/2 mile driveway with great bigass NO TRESPASSING shit everywhere..they say online and when they called on it lady told em I said its all good to trespass,,,,even gave em MY (WTF)# and posted a map ...said keys under front porch!so...I called my self and left messages ,didnt say I was me ,recorded like 12 conversations of some bitch in tennessee tellin me the deal ,she says open bidding no end date blahblah...silly bitch!!
got attorney ..he called her she wont answer anymore !!I mean you said get out ,,,i complied not my fuckin fault mobile home is on 5ft below ground foundation and ya need backhoes, and cranes to removed it,,they cant get it down driveway no more cuz both sides have steel farm fencing and 11yr old evergreens that arent mine!!
So we've proposed a deal ...you sign off on this PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT,,and go away ,,and maybe i wont take your real estate license and press charges for sending every lewder, crackhead seeking metal, arsonist and vagrant a map and key to my MY private property where i live all 5ft tall 140lbs of me alone (well armed tho lol)...they still wont answer hmmmm...aww well 2 more weeks and time they HAD to remove it expires tsktsk couldnt have planned better !still workin 85hrs a week ,,thinkin same thing tictoctictoc
soooooooo happy 2 see ya made it ") xoxo
