I think granny is trying to avoid developing an attachment to the new baby. We've already learned that they don't expect him to survive. She's just lost her daughter and that loss seems pretty devasting. If she avoids the bond, she will avoid the hurt. Am I reading something into this that isn't there?
This is truly lyrical writing. And I love the portrait of Appalachian life. Wish my library had a copy!
