I know...I am trying to imagine the scandal this would have caused in the 60s....and in Charleston of all places. I live in SC about 90 miles from Chaston but I've never heard of this person before. I didn't see the TV show but I've read a couple of books about people who are born with "ambiguous genitalia" and it is truly heartbreaking. There is still today so much misunderstanding. I can't think of the title of the last book on this I read but it was about a Canadian child born in the 60s(??) who had a botched circumcision so the doctors did more early surgery to "make" the baby into a girl and told the parents to just raise her as a girl. (Can you imagine??)But it never worked......finally as an adult she became a he which was what he/she had 'felt'/knew inside all along. But it was a mess and I heard recently that he committed suicide. The book (and probably this one too) will remind me that we should never ever, ever pass judgment on someone because we just don't always know the whole story.
Guess you could say I'm intrigued by this subject and will want to read the whole book.
