I have never read this book before, but I sure hope that Joe learns some gratitude. I mean, yeah, I bet it is irritating not being able to see your friends when you want, but there is a bigger picture, like the family business, and finances. I'm sure he doesn't mean it and it's just his naivity as he's only 13 (at the start anyway). Working on the farm will help him grow up a bit - that's my prediction.
