Fiction Book Club Family History by Dani Shapiro Buy book: $15.42
From the highly acclaimed author of the bestselling memoir, "Slow Motion, " comes a gripping new novel about a family unraveling, and a mother's helpless attempt to protect her children and her marriage.
I just read the first installment of Family History and I must admit, I am already captivated and am left wanting for more. Immediately I felt compassion and a common ground. The story starts from the first word, instead of taking many words to gain a connection with the reader. I look forward to reading more!
Now this is a book I can sink my teeth into! I love the writing, and I agree with Amanda - I'm hooked. My only reservation is that it seems like it is ramping up to be a fairly tragic and sad book...but sometimes those are the best books! Thanks, Suzanne - this one seems like a winner so far.
I'm new to the club...and it looks like this is a good book to start me off. I am captured with the first installment, but I'm fearing it may be depressing. I'm anxious for the other installments to see where we are heading...
Like the four others who have written in, I am hooked, too. This story does get right "into it" and I can tell that events will start spiraling out of control very soon. So I'll go along for the ride and enjoy!
Wow. This kind of book is right up my alley. And I am so happy: I actually have "Family History" in my towering "to read one day" pile. :) YeaH! I am esp enjoying the author's "voice" and the character development so far....thanks so much for this pick!
In my minds eye I am watching my own life as I read this book. Thank God my situation has not progressed to the point of seperation from my husband. Reading this book shows me what could have happened if I had not gotten help. I plan to finish this one!
Just like everyone else here, I'm excited about this weeks book. I have already put a copy on hold for myself at the library. I think this would be great for my next book club selection. I do think this will be a sad one to read. One that that will have me heartbroken when I finish it. That's ok everyone needs a good cry sometimes.
I was hooked from the very first installment and I just could not wait to see what happened so I went to the library and checked it out. Within hours I had devored the whole book. It was very intriguing and haunting. This story could happen to anyone which is why I found it to be somewhat scary.
The main character rings so true, that I can't help feeling that this is an actual persona and not a character in a work of fiction. I want to communicate with her, talk to her about her problems and help her fix everything. I've never felt that way about a character before. This is a must-read for me.
I agree, this book seems to be very depressing. But it is a realistic feeling. Much like She's Come Undone, but from another angle. I have a similar situation in my own life and feel this book is one of which I and other family members may feel connected to.
because we can all feel this immense tragedy is about to be revealed but its like a car accident that you can't help but stop to look at. Shapiro writes so well - her descriptions are so measured and vibrant that I am completely enveloped in this story and cannot wait for each new installment.
My first book club selection and I'm not disappointed. A wonderfully written and griping book that pulls you immediately into the story! I'm using all my self restraint to keep from going to the library or bookstore before Friday! This is a definite must read on my list!
The first day I started reading this book excerpt, I immediately went to my library online and was disappointed that my library system doesn't have Family History. My next stop was Amazon where I ordered the first used book I came to. I too think this could be a great book club book. Yeah it will probably be depressing, and my fellow book club members will complain a bit... Reading about other people's problems helps me put my life in perspective. This book does grab you from the very beginning. Great choice and I will look forward to reading Ms Shapiro's other books.
I liked this book so well that I have a copy on order from Amazon. It caught my attention from the very first sentence and I've looked forward to each day's installment. Eagerly awaiting my book to come now!!!!!!!!!!!
