Teen Book Club Back Stage Pass by Gaby Triana Buy book: $10.72
With her finger on the pulse of today's popular culture, a talented newcomer shows in her hip first novel that "normal" is purely a state of mind in this tale of school, love, and rock and roll.
I don't think desert is a really weird name. I actually kinda like it.....itz original. Everyone wants to be thier own person, wants to be an individual. How can you be An individual when there are a million ppl wit the same name as you? Desert should just relax about her name. but i do understand... A lot of ppl hate their name and would rather sumthing else, but itz just a name.
I have recently joined the book club, but this has been my favorite book so far! I, unfortunately, am unable to find it at my public library. If anyone knows a good place to search outside the library to find this book at a cheap price please contact me at my email address.
Very original plot and I think the author really has skill in her writing because I wasn't bored at all. The first part has captured my attention and I can't wait to read more, book geek as I am. I'm just trying to think of where exactly this book is going with its story....
Well, I think this is a pretty good book, but somehow Desert is getting on my nerves. Does anybody think that too? I dunno why, but she does. I'm hoping she calms down a bit in the next few chapters.
I dont quite know what i think about Desert yet. She seems like the kinda person who would over react to everything. I dont know, ill have to decide a little later in the book. I dont want to judge her becuz i/we don't really know anything about her. I have only read a little about her and i/we don't quite know much about her past.anyway im gonna keep reading and decide if i like her or not.
I am a bit bored with the book so far, the character sounds like a spoiled brat...and nothing really exciting has happend..maybe it will get better...well hopefully..lol
So far I really like the book. Reading's been kind of hit or miss for me this summer because I keep running into really really bad ones, so I was skeptical at first. I don't usually like "new kid tries to fit in" stories because they've been so overdone, but the situation with her dad being famous in that specific way and Desert's internal monologue make it really different. I can't wait to find out what happens next!
I am finding this book to be pretty good, but Desert is definitely over-reacting a lot to these people. I wonder why she just didn't tell people who her Dad was before! Probably because she was always on tour with him. Oh, well. I don't think Desert is such a strange name, I have heard stranger! Like some parents somewhere named there kid Nosmoking or something like that because the first thing she saw after giving birth was a No Smoking sign! I'll post later in the week.
well u were saying that u wonder why she didn't tell people who her dad was before. well, that's what she's been trying to tell us this whole time. she wants ppl to like her for who she is. but i have a feeling Becca will get upset when she finds out Desert has been lying to her.
The story is all right, but she is a bit paranoid. It's kind of like "The Princess Diaries", except with music instead of royalty. I want to know more about her dad and the band.
i agree. this girl is completely paranoid that people will find out her dad is some famous music dude it's funny. But as I read this I'm just sitting here wondering where this story is going because these first two chapters only talk about Desert and her first class at a new school in Miami. I don't see anything that gives a hint about what the main plot is gonna be....
I don't quite see the making of a plot. being a young writer i can see this book being about her trying to keep the secret of who she really is, and finally having to admit to herself and her new friends who she really is. i dont think its going to be one of those books where something extreme happens. but i don't know. Its just a guess, but anyway, i hope it gets a little more intresting.
Here we go! Its starting to get a bit interesting, I wonder whats going on with Faith? hmm....finally sumthin to wonder about, somethin a little more excting than "will they find out who she really is..." *yawn* So this book mite have some potential after all!
i dont agree with Katlyn at all because, we all are asking ourselves if ppl will find out who we really are...maybe thats why its a little boring to us...becuz we do it all the time. And Faith, well, i dont think shes very intresting so far, she doesn't seem like a threat or anything to worry about. i like the book because it makes a story of how we are in everyday life. we all dont want our peers to know who we really are, sum of us anyway. desert is as normal a person as we are, and are our lives any more exciting?
Hey...when you are reading a book you need to look for little hints that show foreshadowing, I think that that was maybe a little hint about sumthin possibly happening, im just trying to look for some excitement in the story...
i do look for little hints of 'excitement' in books, but this doesn't look like one of those hints. and it doesn't look like there is gonna be any excitement in the book.
I was surfing barnes and noble for a new book and this one showed up on my search of things i might like so i add to my wishlist of books i want and then go check my mail. Guess whats in my inbox?? The same book lol! Now I really want it!
I agree with Sherryl & Katlyn; still waiting for some kind of plot to show up. Faith doesn't sound like much of a threat, and even less of a plot development. And living in Los Angeles, Desert is not at all a strange name.
Well, Desert is whiny, but so are a lot of people. That doesn't mean they're stupid or bad in any way. It just means they have to see things in a different light, which does start to happen soon. Keep reading and you'll find out all the plot points soon enough. Attention span is a beautiful thing, people! Thanks for giving it a chance. I'll go back to writing now...ciao.
I don't think it's that bad, it's just a "coming of age" story. I kinda like those.
I can see the whole, whiney and paranoid thing. But a lot of people are, about what people think about them, only that's magnified because of her parent's occupation.
I really like her name I think its cool. Some names are strange and stupid, her's is cool.
Advice to everyone (Including Desert):
Chill out, stop caring so much about pleasing people. Just do what you like no matter what people say and have fun while you're doing it. As most people know about the longest you'll live is 100 years, so why not have fun untill then?
I like a band that all my friends hate, but that doesn't mean I tossed the CD as soon as I heard their judgement, I still listen to it all the time.
Desert seems like a pretty immature 16 year old who just likes to complain. Sure, she has some tough breaks but she needs to appreciate what she's got. So far, I have no idea where this author is going with this book. It doesn't seem to have a point but I guess we'll see.
We are what...3 chapters in? Still not getting very exciting...I dunno...the big isnt that bad but I like some excitement in te stories I read...maybe this is ust one of those books that takes a bit to get going.
OMG! I can't believe you guys don't like this book! It is awesome! I'm going to buy it! Anyway, you should at least give it a try, we only got 3 chapters of the book!
Alritey! Here we go...about time...lol..I was just waiting for her 2 meet liam..although she hasnt exactly "met" him yet...lol...I think that this book definitly has potential...2 bad we dont get 2 read the entire thing :(
Gaby said to stay with this book, that all will be revealed. But honestly, Something needs to happen before chapter 2 to keep one reading. And I'm finding it very difficult to sympathize with Desert, that is if she is the one we are supposed to have sympathy for. Her life seem exciting to me, and although I can imagine how it may be difficult sometimes, I haven't seen it. All we've gotten is complaints. This girl needs a trip to the school counselor's office, because I don't want to hear about it anymore.
I think the book is pretty interesting so far. I don't like the cliffhanger that we are left on! I don't think I'll buy this book, but maybe if I see it at the library I will check it out, but I will not go looking for it. Well, I won't write as much this time. See ya next week!
I really think that in order for a book to seem interesting, something interesting should actually happen during at least the third chapter. I don't know about this book, but if I see it at the library I'll probably check it out due to my always lack of books to read. Otherwise, like if I see it at the bookstore, I'll just scan through farther in the book.
Sorry Gaby for my so-far negative reaction to your book, but I've read better. Keep writing though.
Hey guys... I just joined this book club a couple of days ago and I missed the first couple chapters of the book. Isn't this through the Hennepin Country Library? How come I can't find the book?! Well anyways...feel free to e-mail me with some of your guy's favorite books, as well as what books have you guys read so far. I'm also going to e-mail the author to get to know her & her books a little better. Well talk to you later.
I really enjoyed the parts of Back Stage Pass that we got to read, so I'm having kind of hard time understanding why so many people in the forum feel frustrated with Desert and are being so hard on her--including our Dear Reader guide, Stephanie! I'm not exactly 16 anymore, but I remember feeling a lot of the things we seee Desert struggling with, like the internal dialogue she has when she's talking to Becca and her mom and how territorial she is when Faith is flirting with her dad.
As for cussing, frankly no one should do it, but the fact of the matter is that kids do cuss a lot, and it would seem kind of unrealistic to me if a girl who's spent her whole life touring with a Grammy-winning rock band wasn't a little ahead of her time and maybe even a little screwed up in some ways.
Someone suggested that Desert go to the school counselor, which really surprised me because I thought a lot of the things she complains about and thinks about are pretty normal 16-year-old reactions to stuff. When you're a kid you're supposed to be a little self-centered and a little spoiled because that's how you learn and kind of balance out into being an adult.
But maybe that's a good idea, Desert seeing a counselor of some kind. Maybe more kids in high school should do that. High school is hard--especially when you're in a brand new place like Desert is. High school is all about discovering yourself and inventing yourself, and Desert has to do it all over again every time she moves! My whole life I kept hearing that high school was "the best years of your life," but I don't think it's true. High school is when you learn what you want to do with the best years of your life when they come around.
Not for the impatient, but thanks for trying it out

In an age where books compete with movies, TV, and video games, I can see how most of you are desperate for fireworks in the very first chapters of this book. If you are waiting for someone to shoplift, get killed, hurt someone, or hurt themselves right away to get your attention, then I'm sorry to disappoint you. This book is for people who are willing to wait and see what develops, like a photo in a darkroom, changing from a white page to a picture of multiple colors. But again, most people nowadays are used to the immediate satisfaction of a digital photo, just like many readers with Backstage Pass. And just like a film photo vs. digital, the quality is much better with film. Stick with the book and you'll see what I mean. What you think are boring, inconsequential details are actually clues to an underlying plot. But if you don't have the time to watch it develop, then I understand. This isn't a book for the impatient.
