No comments from you intrepid readers on this selection yet...and I'm not wondering why. Nothing about it appeals to me so far but I will stick it out for the week just in case something great turns up.

I'm hooked so far

July 20 2004, 8:54 AM

I'm enjoying this fast paced read, and will continue through the five day installments. Not sure what a "grifter" is, though I guess it's a traveling con man? Maybe someone can help with that one. Kevin's a sad soul...often sick...even dying, and while I hate Jerry for putting his 14 year old son through hell, I'm intrigued by his "fathering" at the same time. Will keep up my reading, and possibly borrow from the library if I stay "hooked" (as I did with Inamorata by Gangemi)

Hooked also

I love how odd and unpredictable the characters seem to this point. The father is fascinating--shady, not quite likable, but very captivating. I disagree with other readers who haven't seen anything in this yet. I find there to be a very complicated relationship developing already.

Not loving it.

Seems interesting, but I've never been one for reading stuff like this. I don't care much for novels about the "seedy" side of life. But I'll continue to read each day's excerpt because it's kind of intriquing.

Okay so far

Not the best thing i've read in my life, but i like the detail that everything is described in, you can really picture what's going on.

I think it'll pick up as the week goes on.

Ho Hum.
The author has good credentials, but this just isn't my type of book. I forsee a Quentin Tarantino, "Pulp Fiction" type of story minus the eccentric characters. (The girl is already shaping up to be a cliche!) I may end up reading the rest of the week, but probably not the entire book.

Good writing

July 21 2004, 5:18 PM

I've liked the book a lot so far, finding it to have a kind of revamped noir style, with some very good details and writing. Other readers don't seem to like "this kind of book." I wondered if it wouldn't be better served in a Mystery category, or something closer to noir.

still hooked

July 23 2004, 7:50 AM

This last installment (Friday) was a real eye-opener. Lots of exposition, and real personalities evolving with good motivation behind them. Loved Kevin's obsessions and I like Jerry even more. Imagine having to contend with his wife's family to repossess his son. Glad the kid went along with his dad, but I see lots of trouble up ahead. A definite keeper.

Well, it took this last day to finally get me hooked. Jerry and Kevin finally have some development. I didn't think I'd like Jerry but after today's read...I've warmed up to him. Perhaps this has made my ever-growing list...

Getting very involved now

July 23 2004, 3:15 PM

Like others, I wasn't immediately caught by the book--but this last installment really caught me. I think the writing is amazing, as well as the depth of the characters. It seems like this one will keep getting better as it goes.

This book keeps picking up speed throughout. I'm just finishing now--and it's gotten better with every chapter.
