Historical error

August 24 2004, 8:49 PM

Although this novel, the Wedding Night,is a good read so far, I was surprised to find that the hero was supposed to be familiar with kabuki - "Not even the kabuki shows of Japan..." Since Japan was not opened up to the West until Commodore Perry went there in 1853 (except for the Dutch in Nagasaki), there was no way this character could have seen kabuki in 1820. Are my expectations unreasonably high for this type of novel?

Research

Margaret, you have a sharp eye! I'm sure researching historical romance is a daunting task, but I find it interesting that the author's bio says she collects research volumes. Her fact checkers must have missed this one!

This looks very entrancing. I just love historical romance. It is out at the library right now. I will get it as soon as it comes back in. I am looking forward to the next 2 chapters. I look forward every morning to see what is going to happen next.

Interesting

I'm interested in reading the rest of this story and will look for it in my library. Right now I'm trying to feel the connection of the first description of the husband and the man he is later. I'm going to guess that there is his side of the story for their wedding night. It's also still early in the story, but I can't decide if I like the characters or not. I guess that's why I'm going to have to keep reading.

Re: The Wedding Night (Romance)

I was willling to guess that he felt terrible about her horrified reaction to his description of the wedding night process, and left so she would have time to grow up a little. I didn't care for that, but could overlook it. I don't think I can overlook his need to "satisfy himself" so frequently while he has come back seemingly to stop her from disolving their marriage. Perhaps I am reading this incorrectly. Anyone?

Got it - Finished it - Enjoyed it...

I love reading books by authors who are new to me. You just never know where they are going with the story. I found it difficult to believe that she was so open to communication with him and willing to trust him with her thoughts when she had been hurt so badly by him. I enjoyed the story and will look for more books by this author.
