Teen Book Club The Gravedigger's Cottage by Chris Lynch Buy book: $10.72
The Michael L. Printz Honor Award winner offers a deliciously open-ended story about a family who is trying to put bad luck behind it. In a realistic tale of ghosts past, present, and future, Lynch creates an entertaining, intriguing, and accessible story.
This book is sort of confusing, but I can always understand what Sylvia is talking about after I think about it. I am just not so sure I like this book, but after a while it could get pretty good. I guess I will just have to see.
So far this book is cute. Its kinda of a first hand look into a childs life. A child who happens to be the only woman in her house. This is really a good chance to read a book and forget about your own problems for once. I like it a lot!
I'm not sure about this one. The story seems fairly interesting, but I don't think I'd check it out of the library at this point. The writing style doesn't really appeal to me, but I'll keep reading since I've liked other books by this author.
This has got to be one of the most boooooring first chapters I've ever read! How does the author think he can get the reader's attention by drrrooooooooonnninng on about the saaaaamme thinnnnnnnng? :(
This book may be questionable as far as catching my attention. I love stories that grab you and pull you right in. This one... well... let's just sea (get it?) shall we?
The book has an interesting summary, but it's not really the type of book that I would pick out to read. The first chapter was very dull, and sort of ocnfusing to read. (and who really cares about that much detail into where she lives?) But anyways, I hope it gets better as the book goes on.
The description in this book is great. I can practically hear the sea and taste the "bumpy, knobby, gnarly apples that live on the salted air and thin
earth of the seaside." Also, I'm wondering a lot of things...Where's mom? Who were the gravediggers? And why did they only live in the house 16 days!?
Who knows why the author devoted half the exerpt to explaining that they live in the gravedigger's cottage, yet doesn't explain why it's called the gravedigger's cottage. Usually a mystery like that makes me want to read more, but this book is so slow I might be dead myself by the time he reveals why (hmm... mabye because a gravedigger lived there ;)
I don't know how much I like this book. I do agree, the description is awesome, but it's a little repetitive. It's okay to add details to an basic idea, but you do NOT need to say that idea over and over again. Anyway, it could just be a little slow moving, and then when we get into the plot (if we do) it could be excellent.
I think this book is going to be a little scary and to tell you the truth, I don't like scary books at all. I am not really into that kind of stuff. If it changes somemone please tell me. The book could be pretty good.
Finally the pace seems to be picking up. I gotta admit though, I'm not really that drawn into the story yet. I think it might be more sad than scary. Well, I'll have to keep reading.
Most of you can agree that this book just isnt right for you, and that is the same for me. I am not really interested in it. It gets very boring at some parts. Oh well, I will read tomarrows section, but then I think I will stop.
I haven't said much this week..well..er..not as much as last week..so I thought I'd come and say something. I think the plot is picking up a bit, and it's getting a bit more interesting. What do the rest of y'all think?
Okay ,this seals it. I liked Slot Machine, a really funny book by the author, but this one doesn't cut it. Besides the fact that I live nowhere near a body of water, I just can't identify with the characters period. I was hopeing for the best, but forget it. Too bad. A different author could have made this a great story, but I'm just not interested.
Finally, something interesting, and pace! Very sloooww start to this book; way too much description about the cottage (yawn). Get to the story already! It just may have potential. After all, it got published.
By the end of all 5 reading I see that this book has alot more to teach us. I read all of the comments about how its boring and how we still dont know who the gravediggers are, but if you step back and look at it you will see the answer to that question. Yes the gravedigger was someone who lived there in previous years, but Now Silvia is, in some way shape or form, the gravedigger. Shes, firguatively speaking, buried her mother, her brothers mother, and Various pets. I think you all are looking too much into this book. Get a new perspective, or grow up a little, and then read it. Theres somthing here to learn. If you dont see it yet, check out the book.
You've got a good perspective, Cassie, and I do agree with you, looking at the larger picture. But a lot of books have 'big picture' messages and aren't slow to read, aren't hung up on lengthy descriptive passages. As I said earlier, the book got published, so there must be something to it. I'd just like to get to it sooner.
This is one of those books if I'm not really sure if I like and if I did like it I probeblaby would lnly read it once. The whole desription about her dog (Lucy) dying was not exactly pleasant.
