So, protectionist legislation in the form of tariffs was a political hot potato even on essentially day one of our fine nation. I enjoy these little insights provided by historians.

i am always amazed at the persistence and bravery of those who came before us---where would we be without them. It is a wonder that the emerging leaders and explorers were so politically astute in an age of limited communication---no cell phones and yet still with a finger on the feeling of the country---we could learn much from their resourcefullness.
