Continuing her Bitter Creek series, Johnson's follow-up to "The Loner" is a novel of intrigue, passion, and ambition set in Houston and South Texas ranch country.
I've read others in this series. If I recall correctly, the characters usually come across as stupidly stubborn, but I may be wrong in that, and this one may be different.
This is clearly not the first in a not-very-good series. Murder, mayhem, and surrogate parenting all in the first few lines. I won't be reading any more of this one.
