Quality of Care
by Elizabeth Letts
Buy book: $9.32

In this "remarkable first novel" (Tim Farrington), a brief reunion for a young obstetrician goes tragically wrong. An involving, nuanced story about the search for healing and the fragility of both our bodies and our souls, "Quality of Care" is an unforgettable debut by a talented and thought-provoking new voice.

debut novel

February 28 2005, 6:20 AM

I love reading debut novels and trying to guess which author will go on to become the next Anne Tyler or Stephen King or ...you know what I mean. Will this one live up to its opening? It could fall into a formula novel or the characters could really develop and the plot keep up with its promise.

Opening

Yes, I agree.....the opening is GREAT and I am tempted to pre-order the book(!). I am already really enjoying the description of characters, the hospital setting and the obvious tension. From the cover I can just guess what is about to happen. Guess I'll decide by day 5 whether to order or not!

Thoughts

I joined the book club last fall and can usually tell by the first day whether or not I want to buy the book--I want to buy this book. It has my attention and I hope the remainder of the week is as promising as today's read.

I went to Amazon and this book is available (even "used") in paperback so we should be able to find it other places too...library, book store etc. I'm happy about this b/c I want to read the whole book.

Quality of Care

I am really enjoying this book, or at least the 2 days worth of reading I have been provided. I agree with many of the other responders about this book- you hope for a story that will be as good as the beginning. You hope for a writer that will not only bring home the gold on this book, but in many books to come.

I guess I will just have to buy it to find out!

Wow!

This book seems like a winner with me! I usually don't visualize anything when reading books, but the details of the story are playing like a movie in my mind. I must have this book once it's available! Great story line so far.

visual

Yeah, you're right, it is a very visual read, one of those books that you start casting as a movie in your mind once the characters get a bit more developed.
I'm going to seek it out and read the whole thing.

Well, from the way Friday's read ended, I don't think we have any choice but to go right out and buy this book immediately! What a way to leave us hanging!

I loved this excerpt, it will definitely make my book list. I was reading on my lunch break here at work and I can't wait for this to come out. I am so anxious to see what happens and found out why Lydia and her baby are dead...cant wait

I guess this is my time to catch on my reading. I am a little late to respond but this book is very interesting and leaves you wanting to read more. I think I will look at Amazon to find a copy also.
I am glad to read too that the club will have publicity in Women's Day. I will look for it.
Linda
