Well????

April 21 2005, 3:23 PM

Just wondering if anyone had an opinion on this book so far. I am disappointed when there are absolutely no posts for a book. Makes me feel like either noone is reading it, or noone likes it.

As for me...I really don't care for historicals and I can't stand a story that has obnoxious people in it that you just want to slap.

undecided until today

I was undecided until today. I, too, was finding it hard to read about all these obnoxious people - the vicar and family, the magistrate, the viscount. What a miserable bunch of people! Nevertheless, I have to admit I was somewhat intrigued today and wonder what her plan might be. I'm going to check to see if my library has this one.

Why?

I'll tell you why drival like this doesn't interest most of us in the least! I read stuff like this when I was 14 years old. All words, no action between the main characters. The author started out with an unimmortant event that I could care less about.
Now if she had started out with this poor, but strong, woman on her best friends doorstep with her bird clutched in her arms, begging for help for herself and her beloved bird…that would have been interesting. She would have had to explain some of what happened to get her there but you also could have gotten an insite into the two main characters personalities.
Instead we start out lame and I have no interest in ever reading this long winded author. I feel like so many authors write to fill that page with Sir This and Lady That and end up missing the one element of story telling that keeps you reading. Personal interest.

Well now I have become as long winded as the author.
Am I totally wrong? Let me know.

Tenacious Tina

I am thinking that your second assumption is the correct one. I normally enjoy historicals (I just finished one) but this book didn't do a thing for me. There just doesn't seem to be anything to grab my interest. There is a whole lot of time spent on the obnoxious folks who push the main characters out of the rectory but I doubt we will see them again so who cares? Normally, I will read just about any romance for escapism literature but this one just isn't going to make the cut.

Marriage is not the Curial

Some relationships lend themselves to just being a partnership between a couple regardless of their preferences. It seems to me that some couples can settle on a living arrangemnt instead of a marriage or what have you.

might try it

I agree that the vicar & family are unnecesarily obnoxious. The fact that she had to leave could have been handled in a paragraph or two, but the author seemed to want to let us know her character was not going to timidly stand by and be insulted and run over by these people without a fight.

It was refreshing to see Sarah give it right back to the brat & her mother. She also pulled no punches with the guy who was supposed to protect her. She's got major spunk for women of the times. I hope her plan in London will continue in the same tone. It may mean some fun between her and the hero and the typically stuck-up Ton.

I'll give it a try.
