Black Wind by Clive Cussler and Dirk Cussler Buy book: $16.23
Intricate plotting, dazzling suspense, and breathtaking action highlight this latest Dirk Pitt adventure. Now the new head of NUMA, Pitt and his children must find two World War II-era Japanese subs--each carrying a biological virus--before a madman does.
I have always loved the Clive Cussler novels with Dirk Pitt. Keep reading, the beginning is giving you history and the story will usually come back to today and the great characters that Clive Cussler writes about.
Also, I have to say, this is the first I heard that there really is a "Dirk". I didn't know there was a Dirk Cussler. I assume this is Father and Son? I have always loved the books with Dirk Pitt, but had a hard time committing to the Austin character.
Pam, if you did not read the entier book, you missed nothing. While the "historical" aspect of it hooked me at first, when I had checked it out from the library, I was very disappointed. It is an extremely juvenile book, and the author writes himself into the story in the most lame manner.
If this is typical of Cussler's writing, it mystifies me as to how he could possible be popular.
I am becoming a fan of Clusser and currently reading another novel called "Lost at Sea" also by Clusser. I love flims about submarines regardless of the culture protrayed. I felt that by reading this novel that it offered another view of the military. It made me feel that I was seeing a rare sampling of the Japanese Navy. Not quite relying Japanese intelligence but rather close to it.
Not a novel, but you might want to consider "Shadow Divers" by Robert Kurson. It is the true story of the search for a German U-boat which sank off New Jersey and goes into the human side of war, telling about the men and how closure was brought for their families. This book was a Non-fiction club read and you can find all the comments on page 2 (as of now) of the Forum titles. It is also the Audio club selection this week.
I just finished Shadow Divers and loved it! I would highly recommend it as well if you like this book. I love Black Wind so far - my first time reading Clive Cussler. I think I love these books because they're a refreshing change from the mystery novels that I usually read. Thanks Suzanne, for introducing us to both of these great books!
