Well, so far I wasn't liking it too much, but it is starting to get more interesting.

I'm notta gambler....

but this is getting better every day. I'm quite surprised at the lack of comment on this one. here's my question to put out there: What's a "shoe"?(show him how the snapping test is no different than when the cards are dealt from a "shoe") I've been reading online with you guys for several months but this is my first post... and here I am showing my total lack of gambling lingo! Maybe if I read the rest of the book I'll be wanting to go to Las Vegas?

Shoe

Isn't the shoe the thing that holds the cards and they are dealt one at a time from it?

I don't know anything about gambling, either, and I'm not really interested in casinos, but the more I read of this book, the more interested I become. I'm having a very complicated week, and after the first read I had considered putting this book on my "delete" list, but now I'm glad I've stuck with it. I think I'll look into checking it out from the library.

I'm not reading this book but seems i remember the word "shoe" in connection with gambling casinos from another book way back - think shoe is a cardholder - if you want more info, go to google and type in gambling shoe which is what I did and there is much info there -

You're right!

A shoe is what they hold the cards in. I'm not a gambler, either, though I did get quite a lot of information by reading the fabulous book "Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions." If you haven't read it, DO SO! It's nonfiction that reads like a novel -- a great novel.

I hated this book at the start of the week. It sounded like pulp fiction, clichéd, trite, you name it. But here I am at the last day thinking, "Darn. Another one to put on my library list!" I may yet be disappointed -- I've had that happen a few times with book club titles -- but Suzanne and crew's track record is really good!

Enjoyed it

I've been eager to get back to a computer after almost a week on the road...a week that I spent two days reading this selection...couldn't put it down in spite of the grandeur of the British Columbia scenery. The first part was a little rough, but the remainder of the story was great: action packed, funny, and smart. I recommend it highly. And, yes, a "shoe" (in casino lingo) is a box into which the deck(s) of cards are placed and then dealt one at a time. Supposed to prevent cheating by the dealer. I'm not a gambler, never having dropped a single nickle into a slot machine on our five trips through Reno and Las Vegas, but the descriptions of the scams pulled off by this bunch is fascinating.
