A Song I Knew by Heart
by Bret Lott
Buy book: $22.45

Inspired by the Biblical story from the book of Ruth, this novel is a beautiful exploration of the power of love and family, of the ravages of grief and regret, and of the strength of the mother-daughter bond.

Excellent author

If you've never read Brett Lott before you are in for a real treat. Yrs ago I read "The Man who Owned Vermont" and he instantly became a favorite author. His book "Jewel" is absolutely beautiful and one you don't forget. A reading group I was in read it and all the way thru none of us could believe how a male author could write so beautifully and perfectly from a woman's perspective. I have a feeling it will be the same with A Song I Knew.....this book has sat in my to-read pile for at least a year. I am so happy to be kick-started! Yay! (thanks Suzanne!!!)

Thanks for the critique, eLIZabeth. This selection was available at my library, so I have a copy in hand...already well into it. It is truly lyrical, and I'm eager to start the journey with Ruth and Naomi.

Just a response

I have to totally agree with the author of this message. She allowed me to feel assured she wrote that Brett is
deeply embedded in a womens soul. He has the depth and compassion to be able to take situations and allow me to believe that he, in fact, is so connected to his own feelings and emotions. He is not hindered by the male ego. I think he is amazing and this book is on my list to purchase.

New in Club

Hi all

I've just started with the book club but am an avid reader. I read Jewel also and thought the book was an excellent read. Bret Lott's characters are so real that you get quickly involved with their story.

I have already put in my name at the Library to read A Song ...

Good Book; beautifully written

October 30 2005, 6:37 PM

I bought this book at a conference during the summer and read it in a day. The author did a good job of updating the story of Ruth. Naomi's vioce just springs off the page and I really felt that she was speaking the story to me. I highly recommend this wonderful book.

I think I will like this one. I was so surprised to see in Elizabeth's respose that this author is a male. I would have never guessed that from this read. Today's read was beautifully written and I think I will really enjoy this one.

Just now getting the book after over a mth. of waiting - surprised at the long wait on this one - but having just read the "rest" of the hissy fit after she came downstairs, I laughed and thought "Go, Girl - and even if I don't read any more, it was worth it just for that all out Hissy Fit " - but am reading more and enjoying - (know you all were waiting with bated breath for my response - LOL - just thought I'd share) -

Ah............. Brett, you're terrific

One of my favorite stories from the bible.
The author brings the past to present in such a beautiful way.

There is nothing as beautiful as a loving,
giving, heart.

This book will teach readers in a modern way what real love is about.

I really enjoyed Jewel as well, and I always meant to read another book by him. I think that this will be it because I want to find out what happens next.

Jewell -

November 8 2005, 12:10 PM

Have gotten the book, Jewell, and was so looking forward to reading it, but after reading just a bit of it, realized " I believe I've read this" but don't really remember yet what happens next, but it immediately captured me so I am continuing with it - (after all, it was published in 1991 I believe) - don't usually read a book a second time, but if and when I remember it, think I will because it is so wonderfully written -
