Magical Thinking
by Augusten Burroughs
Buy book: $15.56

From the number-one bestselling author of "Running with Scissors” and "Dry” comes Augusten Burroughs's most eagerly anticipated collection yet: true stories that give voice to the thoughts that we all have but dare not mention. This is the fabric of Augusten Burroughs's life: a collection of true stories that are universal in their appeal yet unabashedly intimate, stories that shine a flashlight into both dark and hilarious places. With "Magical Thinking,” Augusten Burroughs goes where other memoirists fear to tread.

I just read monday's installment and all I can think of is GREAT! While it does remind me of David Sedaris,I do love to read essays. I think I'll look for his books at the library. May ask Santa for this one though.

Magical Thinking Turn-off

November 14 2005, 1:47 PM

I loved the buildup to the book but after reading the first week's except was turned off by the repeated use of the "F" word. Once is enough and even then, is it really necessary? Like comedians who use foul language repeatedly to get laughs. Mybe they do this as they think its the only way they can get laughs?

Also turned off.

I could never understand why 'Running with Scissors' won all the acclaim. This book seems similar. The author had an unfortunate, unfunny childhood. I'll skip this one.

Boy, not me...

...Not skipping this one....I read "Dry" and loved it. I'm enjoying this so far for the same reasons....I DO laugh at the author's self-deprecating wit. Is it sarcasm? Satire? I don't know but I find him very funny. I understand the humor is his coping mechanism for a messed up (putting it mildly) childhood, nonetheless it makes me laugh. Through all his humor his twisted anguish comes through and this makes me love him and his books all the more!

Well...

I was interested to see why people didn't like this excerpt. I guess I don't pay much attention because the use of the "f" word didn't even stick out for me until I just read the opinions here. I think this book looks interesting, I have always wanted to read something by him. One of these days I will have to.

love this guy

As a mother of 2 children under 3, I am quite selective what I read, being very very tired at the end of the day. I don't know how he is able to write about such painful memories, and crack me up at the same time. He is one of my favorites. Great choice.

Oh my, he's me!

I, too, was obsessed with commercials. As a child, trips to the grocery store with my mother included statements like, "Mom, buy Bounty, it's the quicker-picker-upper!"

I'm digging this book. I'm sorry I missed his other books; now I'll have to look for them!

Laughter is good for you!

Having read and enjoyed both "Running w/Scissors" and "Dry", I've been meaning to read "Magical Thinking". Each excerpt this week has made me laugh out loud. Sad childhood, but his writing is hilarious!

I usually dont like non-fiction books, but when I signed up I signed up in almost every category, because I wanted to read many different things. So far, almost every non-fiction book has been deleted, but I like this one. I am glad to find a non-fiction book that wont instantly deleted from my list of daily reading.

a find

November 18 2005, 5:04 AM

There is something about this book that had me looking forward to reading it each morning and now that the excerpts are over, I feel almost bereft. I just adore young Augusten -- he's so loopy, so honest. I ask myself, how is it that I had never heard of Augusten Burroughs before? I feel as if -- thanks to the Book Club -- I have discovered a new, wildly funny writer, someone full of angst and self-satire. I have ordered several copies for myself and as Christmas gifts for my more irreverent friends. I will certainly buy his previous books.
