I am not a sports fan, but this just might be the bio that I want to read. I would like to understand how someone with a career providing the kind of salary that Pete Rose must have been making, can screw up their life so badly. I have never been a gambler, so maybe I can understand how people get hooked on "the action". We`ll see.
I am a sports fan in particular a baseball fan so I am glad that we have another baseball book feature in here. I happen to watch the movie "Hussle" this weekend which is the story of Pete Rose and his gambling problems so this book feature came at the right time.
I enjoy sports for the skill, agility, dedication, competition etc. But I think I am overdosed with news reports of athletes and their struggles! I watch and participate in sports to escape, not be dragged down. Interesting book here but I'm passing for now. (although I *might* watch the movie, lol!)
BASED ON HIS BASEBALL STATS.Pete rose needs too be reconized into baseball's hall of fame.. if not. then other " bad charcter" guys should be left out of the hall... Guys like.. Babe ruth [ he was a drunk]..ty cobb [ he was a raciest !]
I hate to be one to comment only when I have a complaint, because I've read several of the non-fiction club's books and liked them all . . . except for this one. Why couldn't Rose find a ghostwriter who could write? The book is a total train wreck -- I only kept reading to see if it could get any worse. I bought it at the dollar store and couldn't sell it for that much on Amazon -- they're going for literally one penny there.
Do NOT read this book. Instead, pick up Phil Jackson's "The Last Season" which I just started and am enjoying a lot, and is by an author (Jackson himself) who can actually write.
I read the book. Before I read it I thought he should be in the hall of fame just by hearing some of the things that he did. While reading the book though I was even more convinced that he should be recognized for the things that he did in baseball. Sure he broke a rule but isn't there a lot of other people who to break the rules but yet they still get the recognization that they deserve. Rose's gambling didn't affect his game or his management. His records and achievements came from the skill he had and worked a lot for and the work ethic taht he had. So to say that he isn't not hall of fame worthy is total bull ****.
