I loved the movie you refer to, pam - did not read the book - I have read other of her books, but now can't think of a single one - will have to search in my brain or my library web site to see her list of books to refresh my memory
Yes Doris, I saw the movie and loved it too. A good vehicle for slow-talking William Hurt and Geena Davis was the dog trainer. The book (as usual) was better. I remember many laugh out loud portions.
Merry Christmas to all!
No, not Ann Tyler, Ky. author - Bobbie Ann Mason, Ky. author - But I am delighted and excited to find the books listed by Ann Tyler that I have read and LOVED long ago and now feel like I want to go out and buy them all - feel like I have found a lost treasure or treasures - books like Dinner at the Homesick Cafe, Looking for Caleb, St. Maybe, etc. etc. -
Thanks Suzanne, for having this book in the club, as it helped me rediscover the author -
I get a much needed break this week! I've read (and enjoyed) this one, so I can catch up on past week's reads. I have an audio copy of The Drowning Tree, so not only will I get to enjoy "reading" a good book, but I'll keep up with the demands of the kitchen, etc. Merry Christmas to you all!
This is the first book I have read by Tyler. I have seen them over the years, but yet to pick one up. I really like the start and I can see that this book has debth. I can't wait to read the rest of this.
I have enjoyed the five-days read of this book. It is developing nicely. The scene of the mother fainting was written very well. I can imagine her sadness and shock especially the way the son told her. This also portends how he will deal with issues involving his future wife...he lacks a certain sensitivity. I will definitely continue the book to the end.
I was pleasantly surprised to find this story developing smartly. The scene where the mother faints was particularly well done. I can imagine just how she must feel to find out her son is putting himself in danger, but also how he told her in a very public setting. He just told her, without any kindness or consideration as to her feelings. This portends how he will treat the other important woman in his life.. his future wife. He is already insensitive and selfish. But I am interested to find out how the marriage will evolve. I will definitely purchase this book.
I love Anne Tyler books. The Amateur Marriage is a book I will put on reserve as
soon as I finish the one I am now reading,
called 'Despite the Falling Snow' by Shamin
Sarif. It too is a story of love long ago
in Stalin-ruled Russia and of today.
I love this book club, and look forward to
reading an excerpt daily.
Tyler has always been a favorite of mine. I've read all her novels so far, and find that I have an affinity for her hapless characters. I look forward to see how they will get out of the predicaments they involve themselves in, and as always, I have a stong tendency to root for the underdog. And there are so many of these in Tyler's works. I hope she will come forth with a new novel soon, as I tend to read them as soon as they are published, and like an old dear friend who departs, I am always sad when I've reached the end of a Tyler work of fiction. Thanks for this excerpt, Suzanne. I think folks tend to get hooked once they become familiar with Anne Tyler's novels.
This book was wonderful. I could not put it down. I read the whole book in a very short time. She brings you into the story with such style. I loved the characters. I will read the rest of her novels. Thanks so much for showing this great author.
