disclaimer

Just curious: Why does this excerpt have a disclaimer at the beginning? I don't think I've seen that before on any previous book excerpts.

Holy Fools

January 20 2006, 10:58 AM

This is my first week getting a look at new fiction through this site. I am going to give it one more week.
Certainly it can't get worse than this?

What's worse? What's better?

I've been subscribed for Fiction, Non-fiction, Teen, and Audio for nearly seven months. I'm not sure what you mean about "worse than this"; this has not been one of my favourite selections, but it seems to me that this is a matter of taste, not quality. Certainly, I've loathed some selections, and loved (and hunted down) others. After all, that's why I joined, to get exposure to books I wouldn't ordinarily read. Incidentally, I've noticed that a number of the selections here also turn up on The New York Times' annual "Best Books" list, if that makes any difference to you. On the whole, I've found the experience worthwhile. If I hate the week's book, I delete the emails and wait for next week. I hope you find the next selection "better".

I'm with you Gail, the selections are not always to my liking, but the exposure to new and different books and authors is worth the few minutes a day to peruse these writings.
For me, I am enjoying the scene setting and look forward to checking this out from my local library.

Her books are worth sticking with...

I've read about 4 of Joanne Harris' books. They are worth sticking with. I was especially intrigued by the history of the mermaid chair in "Coastlines". Her settings are always colorful and transporting. I especially enjoyed "Five Quarters of an Orange"-- a must read!
