The Heartbreaker
by Susan Howatch
Buy book: $15.00

Deftly combining the sacred and the profane--the unmistakable hallmark of her fiction over the past decade--Susan Howatch gives readers a spellbinding, suspenseful and psychologically intense new novel.

Goodness! I've actually read this one!

I was startled to realize that I read this book about two years ago. I'm a fan of Susan Howatch's books --- usually. An odd feature of her novels is that they are very slow-going for about a third of the way in, then (again, usually) the narrative seizes you by the throat and you can't put the book down. Alas, this book was an exception. I forced my way through it, but was never beguiled. I can, however, recommend most of Susan Howatch's previous books with a reiteration of my warning: slow-going at first, but worth the effort. I'd give this one a miss though.

Thanks

Gail, thank you for saving me time. I saw this book in the sales area of the bookstore and almost purchased it. I've absolutely loved some books by Howatch, like "Wheel of Fortune," but I remember reading one that I didn't enjoy at all. Sounds like this one would be in that same category.

I was terribly disappointed with the seediness of this novel. NOthing like the previous 8. Can we expect something new soon?

Glad to see I am not the only one

I am new to the book club, but so far I love the idea of previewing books before I buy them. I am an avid reader and always looking for new authors. This book seems to be dragging and I am glad I read that they are slow to start. I can't get into this one like I wanted to, and I really thought, well I am new, so just keep plugging along....but I really don't like this one.

Take care and happy reading!
