The Serpent on the Crown by Elizabeth Peters Buy book: $16.34
A novel filled with riveting suspense, pulse-pounding action, and the vibrant life of a fascinating place and time, The Serpent on the Crown is the jewel in the crown of a grand master, the remarkable Elizabeth Peters.
I am deliciously hooked into this book with just the opening paragraphs given to us to day! Whew....what description of place and characters! I am looking forward to reading this week.
I too thought the first chapter did a good job of hooking the reader. I am still somewhat skeptical that this book with be a formulaic mystery regarding the curse of the hidden treasure but I'm at least willing to give it a chance having read today's excerpt.
Hello Janice Strong, Amanda and anyone else that too shy to reply.
I too like this one, but I'm little confuse about who is who? I never like it when author start out with too many charachers. Maybe I have to reread it.
It's good to that it goes right into the curse treasure. Some book, I have read take too long to get into the story and you lose interest in the book. Can't wait to read more.
I have been a longtime fan of Elizabeth Peters (aka Barbara Mertz).I was extremely pleased when I saw it was being previewed. I, of course, already read this book when it first came out. In order to better appreciate this book, it would be advisable to start from the beginning of the series. Elizabeth Peters has written a whole series based on the "Amelia Peabody" (now Amelia P. Emerson) character. The first is "Crocodile on the Sandbank". It sets the groundwork and introduces the primary characters. Subsiquent books continue to add to the list of reccurring characters. All of her books are delightful to read; they are entertainingly written, suspenseful and interwoven with historical information. As you can tell, I am a HUGE fan. If you liked this book, you will enjoy the whole series, the newest one having just been released--"The Tomb of the Golden Bird".
I hope everyone at least gives the previewed book a read--I think you will enjoy it...
WHAT? Are you tell me, Joanne that we are reading a book that from a series based on the Amelia Peabody. So no wander I have got confuse about the primary characters. I have never read the first book in the series, which is where I would have be introduces to the primary characters. Some books introduces alittle about each of the primary characters in each of the author's series books. But Elizabeth Peters does not do that. What is Suzanne is thinking of getting us to read a book that in the middle of a series. I just can't believe that you will do this to us. Well, I'm not going to ever try to read any more of this book. But I will read the FIRST of the SERIES one day, when there are no mystery books to read. Thank you joanne.

To Zoe:
I am sorry that my e-mail review has discouraged you to such an extent that you will not finish reading this book. That was not my intention, I assure you. I just wanted to let any readers know, that if they enjoyed this book, the author has written others.
True, "Serpent on the Crown" is part of a series; but this book, as do all of Elizabeth Peters' books, stand well on their own.
I believe that the purpose of the Online Book Club is threefold; (1) to expand our reading "horizons" (2) to expose readers to all types and styles of writing, and (3) to inspire our curiousity to try books we ordinarily would not read or even know about. In my opinion, it does this quite well. I have "sampled" a few books from this club and have then gone out and either purchased or borrowed the book from the library.
Please do not be discouraged--keep on reading!!
To joanne,
Thank you again, but you don't discouraged me to not finish reading this week book. Even though this is a part of a series and stand well on it own.
