Of late, people are talking about the phenomenon of runner up advantages. Especially with respect to innovation, the runner up advantage is that they can copycat rather inexpensively. They can also observe the leader and adapt and hence from monetary/business perspective can be very successful. The question then is who wants to be the leader?

This book, on the other hand, argues and provides information on cases where the leader or first mover gets a long lasting edge not just on that specific business where it started but in many other related areas too.

This book will help learn and understand what kind of market conditions create the later , what is refered as the tornado effect. Plus it provides insight into technology marketing and positioning with cases from Lotus, Peoplesoft, Oracle etc which I am very much interested. This stuff is interesting to read even as a historic narration of how these companies did what they did.
