The Brambles
by Eliza Minot
Buy book: $14.84

The story of the Bramble siblings--Margaret, Max, and Edie--captures life lived among children and adults, anchored by marriage or undone by it, unmoored by solitude or desperately in need of it. Margaret, mother of three, drowning in a sea of runny noses and lost mittens, is about to take her ailing father into her already overcrowded home. Edie, young and single, is struggling to find meaning in her desultory isolation. Max, newly unemployed and hiding it, is buckling under the responsibilities of marriage and fatherhood. Over the course of one critical season, a long-hidden secret will be revealed, remaking each of them and all they thought they knew about one another and about themselves.

an honest look at the uncertainties of retirement

"Elegant purgatory" that "blurs like a night of heavy drinking"--I like the way this author captures the fear of entering even a supposedly comfortable retirement.
Not many books dare to discuss this uncertainty which ultimately faces us all.

Interesting characters and showing weaknesses...

May 11 2006, 8:43 PM

Yes, it is not exactly what people want to read about, but it has drawn me into its web. And aging is not a popular subject, unless it can be seen from our eyes as we are not as old looking as our years say. I think the conversation showing Mr. Bramble's loss of memory and his physical weakness is important. We are not guaranteed health in this life....and he definitely is succumbing to debilitating health issues. I find the conversations very interesting...then, his daughter is coming for a visit...yes, I will read more after this week is over.
