history made personal

I'm grateful for this opportunity to learn about a book that brings the historical to the personal level. As with Bound for Canaan, the book club selection that made the Underground Railroad so vivid, this book brings out an aspect of WWII that needs to be acknowledged.

I know I am going to like this book and will search it our to read in it`s entirety. I`ve never been one of the downtrodden except for being poor during the "great" depression, but I always like to read about others exploits, and how they made their way through.

Unsung Heroes.

I am surprised by the lack of posting for this fascinating book; but I quess that's par for the course:" The more things change, the more they stay the same". That being said, this is an interesting story of our forgotten history. These brave men risk everything for their country ,fighting nazisim, only to return here to these shores and be treated as second class citizens. The humility of the men is beyound honorable. All of this done , not for self agrandizement , but for the love of one's country and people. This book is a must read and a keeper. Thank you for another great selection.

tremendous insight

I'm so grateful to the writers of this book, for explaining how it is that the men of my father's generation came to learn about cars and other mechanical things: they point out that FEW of the sons of the Depression had ever driven a car, and so "[t]hey had to be trained from scratch in the basic maintenance of motor vehicles, lectured repeatedly on the function and significance of everything from headlights and motor oil to fan belts and spark plugs. They were taught how to drive motorcycles, followed by jeeps and trucks, with a sergeant watching over their every move, riding beside or pacing behind them. Finally, they were brought before a tank." I'll be damned!! It isn't that they KNEW this stuff BECAUSE they are men, but rather that the ARMY drilled them on it. My, my, my. Just ONE telling point of history as observed by folks rarely consulted or acknowledged, in this book. FABULOUS!
