Gods in Alabama by Joshilyn Jackson Buy book: $12.96
A crime from her youth threatens a young woman's future in this extraordinary debut novel that follows in the bestselling Southern tradition of "Big Stone Gap."
I got a chuckle reading it so far. I get hounded so often about when I am going to be coming home for visits to my family and they are only 3 hours away. looking forward to reading more.
What do you mean by chicklit story? I have heard that term before but I am not sure if it just means any modern fiction with a female protagonist or something else?
Think it is a little too early for me to make a decision on this one - will just read the rest of the week's reads and then perhaps check it out of my library - they do have it, also her second novel, "Between, Georgia" -
One thing for sure - it is a quick read - in two ways - my reading of it and the conversation on the phone between the dtr. mother and aunt - reads like stacatto (is that the right word?) - the book did get good reviews, but that is not always my opinion -
As an avid reader of chick-lit, I don't think that this book really fits into the "chick-lit" genre. Most chick-lit books have a female protagonist in her mid to late 20s who is trying to balance work, life, and love, and usually with a very humorous bent. Bridget Jones is chick lit, Marian Keyes books are chick lit, Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella is chick lit...but Gods in Alabama doesn't have the right tone to make it chick lit, in my opinion. It might straddle the fence and be more "literary" chick lit, like Pug Hill, which I just read recently.
Being a southern girl myself - I'm loving this weeks selection. I myself will never leave but do have friends and family like Arlene who vow to never cross the Mason-Dixon line again. I love the character's sense of humor. You can tell this author really was raised in the south. Everybody I know has an aunt like Flo. This is great!
I really liked "Gods in Alabama". The characters are very real and there were plenty of surprises in the storyline. Above all, I was a little sorry when it was finished. My recommendation is to read on - it will reward you!
Have just read the five reads and don't know much of what is going on except perhaps - what did she kick under the kudzow vines before she left Alabama? - a quarterback maybe - and thought of that in the first read - only in the last read did I realize her boyfriend is black - and can see why that may present a problem for her - but don't think the reads have given us much this week - maybe the best is yet to come - my library does have it - so may give it a go - so far, I don't think it is chick-lit either -
I began this one grudgingly, and found myself looking forward to each day's installment with higher and higher hopes. What I do when I'm truly struck by the samples is I save off the last email in a folder (comes in handy to remind myself which books I've told myself I'm going to buy next). This one went right in there. Excellent start to what I assume will be an excellent novel.
