Lost in the Garden
by Philip Beard
Buy book: $15.56

Michael Benedict, overprivileged but undermotivated, seems to have it all: a beautiful wife, two lovely daughters, a law practice that provides a comfortable life for his family, and a natural golf swing. Can it all unravel in a few short months?

Like it

After today's 1st read I like this! I had to check a few times to see if this was fiction or not :) I like the easy-to-read voice of Michael. Am looking forward to see if it still grabs me by the end of the week.

I agree

I also had to recheck to make sure it was fiction. I really enjoyed the style. This should be a very interesting plot told very cleverly.

Good beginning

This sounds like it's going to be an enjoyable read. I like the way Michael is talking to you through the book. I'm going to be checking this out of the library because I don't think I can wait for the daily doses!

Great Read Today -

December 5 2006, 12:22 PM

Loved today's second read - almost feel sorry for him - he hasn't got a chance against his wife (the prosecutor) to win this case - and it is so funny in its dry witted written way - think I'll be getting this one from my library -

Based on your comments....

December 5 2006, 6:59 PM

For some reason, I have fallen off the mailing list for the daily excerpts. Based on all of your comments about this book, I have requested a copy from the library. I recently discovered that if you check out something that you don't really like, you are not required to finish it, you can just take it back!!! I should have it tomorrow and will let you know what I think. Now I hve to figure out how to get back on the mailing list.

Lost in the golf narrative

I really liked this book at first, but it was all I could do to finish today's read. All the golf discussion was really putting me to sleep.

lost in the golf narrative

December 7 2006, 4:52 PM

I'm a new golfer so the golf aspect of the book does not put me off. Plus all the commentary about the origin of the golf course and the overall snootiness of the talk between the narrator and his caddie is really appropriate. It adds a lot of dimension and tension to the story....

Re: Lost in the Garden (Fiction)

December 6 2006, 5:50 PM

I liked the first email and went to check out my libraries catalogue...but I couldn't find the book. Even when I look up just the author, sometimes I get nothing. I've been having this problem more often recently especially with the author buzz selections. Anyone else noticing this?

Also getting bored on the golf course - am not a golfer and don't see the relevance to all this talk of the golf course and its beginnings, etc. - if the book doesn't get back to the story line between him and his wife pretty soon - will give up this game -

More intriguing

December 7 2006, 12:13 PM

I'm still not receiving the daily reads, but your comments are really getting my interest up! I'm an avid golfer and understand how the game relates to life and vice versa. My library copy will be available today.

It would probably help to know more about golf to appreciate how the author is using it as a way of conveying class differnence...the namedropping of mellon, et al. is sort of an insiders perspective....

Don't play golf but...

December 7 2006, 6:01 PM

I am actually enjoying some of the golf talk. As of today I've ordered this book as a Christmas present for a male golfer in my family. I have no idea whether he will enjoy this or not but in this case I am hoping the golf talk might help hook him in! Thanks Suzanne for helping me scratch one name off my present list :)

I'm Back!

December 8 2006, 10:58 AM

Thanks, Doris for the web address. I'm already back on the list and received the entire week of reads. Also picked up the book at the library. I must say I am enjoying it immensely! If you are not a golfer, it's probably not for you. But if you like the author you might check out his earlier novel, DEAR ZOE. I haven't read it, but it's on my future read list.

WOW! I really enjoyed this selection. Just as one of the other readers stated I had to check to make sure it was fiction as well. This style of writing is very convincing of true life. This has made my list of "must reads".
