Fifth Business
Robertson Davies

Ramsay is a man twice born, a man who has returned from the hell of the battle grave at Passchendaele in World War I decorated with the Victoria Cross, and destined to be caught in a no-man's-land where memory, history, and myth collide. As Ramsay tells his story, it begins to seem that from boyhood he has exerted a perhaps mystical, perhaps pernicious influence on those around him. His apparently innocent involvement in such innocuous events as the throwing of a snowball or the teaching of card tricks to a small boy proves, in the end, neither innocent nor innocuous.

The first novel in the celebrated Deptford Trilogy, "Fifth Business" stands alone as the remarkable story of a rational man who discovers the marvelous is only another aspect of the real.

I have to admit I have never heard of this book, but after reading the sample I am very interested. That is the beauty of the book clubs, finding books and authors you have never heard of. I am a fan of the classics, but I have to say that there have been a few on here that I would have never attemped had it not been for the sample read. I just tell myself what's the harm it's just a few pages and if you don't like it move on. I am interested in finding out more about this characters life and the lives of the people in his small town. I will have to head off to my library for this one. Thanks Suzanne for showing me something new.
