An intricately wrought, multilayered novel, "Lies" ranges from the present to deep in the past. Told through two narratives, the stories are both brutal and exciting. Together these stories illuminate the importance of storytelling in shaping beliefs about families and their histories.

Wow, what incredible writing. I'm enjoying this read and love the way the story slowly unfolds letting your imagination fill in the blanks.

I feel like I'm being lied to...

October 29 2007, 11:16 PM

So far I'm not convinced, maybe the translation is poor but the language, particularly the metaphors, feel forced to me. I willing to keep an open mind about "Lies" so long as the author doesn't continue to write in gross cliches such as:

"If I were writing a novel, I'd say that the
bond that was going to link our two destinies was formed in that last moment. In novels, assertions like this grandiose words that
give some weight to chance, however ethereal chance may be--can sound appropriate. But not in real life.."

Isn't this, after all, a novel? It sounds like an entry for the Bulwer-Lytton fiction contest...

Hopefully "Lies" improves on Wednesday.

I thought I must be reading the wrong book until I saw W. Darnell's post. Everything seems forced, tired, over complicated. I can't get into it. The cliches are a problem and it seems like the author is going for a Lauren Bacall/Bogart style that comes off as a bored character. I'm not getting it.

Bored

I'm not liking the book. It seem to trudge on and on with no interuptions. I tried to wait for something interesting to go down but so far its just bland. It's kinda like when an old person is remembering there past and slowly telling about it; they think it was so fascinating but you think its boring.

Now I am really into the book and can't wait to see what Isabel's secret is. Could her family be so confused that they are unable to recognize her body or is there some other confusion going on? And who is this boss? This has really got my curiosity going.

Well I bought this book thinking that I was really going to get into it. So far I am bored stiff with it. Can't waste my money so I am going to stick with it for better or for worse.
