A hilarious and deliciously scathing send-up of motherhood as practiced in the upper echelons of Manhattan society, from the coauthor of The Right Address and Wolves in Chic Clothing.
I just read this book a few weeks ago and thought it was great, although there were times I wanted to scream"tell them all to go to blazes and get on with your life"The things those Mom's did was so funny. At least to this single, broke Mom.Reminded me of my Dad saying"more money than sense".
Yes like you I used to come home from school to a list of chores,I still remember that Wednesday's I have to scrub the bathroom.

LOL, I feel same way. Oh well....maybe next life . Seriously, I read this a few months ago as pure escape and enjoyed it thoroughly. It is so fun to see how the other half lives. But it made me so relieved and happy to be just plain old me. Although, I did start thinking my town was heading down the wrong path when one of the private schools started having "tests" for pre school admission. :)
Have you read The Devil in the Junior League? Another hoot.
No Liz,
I haven't read D in the Junior League but if it has similar flair, I will definitely add it to my list. Unfortunately I don't have any favorite authors and find it difficult to just find a book that I like by just browsing through it so I am having a great time with this book club. So far I have ordered the last book "Lies" and will order Momzilla as well. I will add Devil to the list after I'm done with those two.
Thanks for the referral.
I was enjoying the book up to this excerpt. Now I feel like she speaking a foreign language. Words like "awky" & "convo" don't have any meaning for me. Maybe this is current slang, but my teenage boys have been unable to enlighten me. I don't think I'll continue my struggle to decipher what this author is trying to say.
I'm with you, Z. And no, I don't think those words are popular slang. Even if they were, they don't belong in this type of novel. I find the terms "peeps" and "dicks over chicks" and "bidniss" to be unnecessary and off-putting. It's like she's trying too hard to be hip.
Z,
I was proud of myself for reading right through MIL (mother in law) and DIL (daughter in law) but then I got to some of the slang and I was befuddled. I think I am going to stick with the book anyway and in my spare time tackle the slang(smile)
I too find the slang-sitch, awky, peeps and all the rest really odd. No wonder she doesn't fit in on the upper east side. She sounds like she is in middle school. Worse, the character's speech is so inconsistent. One sentence she sounds like she's texting not talking the next she's talking about taking a sojurn, and flouting one thing or another. On the other hand, at least trying to figure out what some of these words mean has kept my interest. The plot sure wouldn't.
Will definitely read this book as it has what's going to happen next hunger creeping in. Reminds me of a very similar situation in my life about a decade ago !!
I'm just not hip enough for this book. Can not relate. My text speech is limited and I really don't want to try and figure out what is being said. LOL (ha-ha)
I totally agree with all of the above comments on the use of slang words in this novel. It seems she was doing just fine with a nicely written story and suddenly attempted to jazz it up a little with some hip words!! Also, something funny struck me, anyone familiar with the movie Clueless? Can't you just see the Bee character as Cher with a stroller and Hannah as the 'clueless' out of towner about to learn how to be a trendy yummy-mummy from the Momzillas!!?
This is the first time I've encountered 'net speak in a book and it's terribly distracting

I chat on the internet all the time so I understand what the character is saying. But that stuff is only appropriate for IMs. I would never talk like that in "real life" and have a hard time believing a 30 something woman with a Masters degree and a baby would talk like that either. Maybe I just don't know enough people in California? Is it a regional thing?
It's a shame too because I wanted to like Hannah and was interested in reading the book. But the slang just kept pulling me right out of the story.

Ok, I had to get the book and finish reading it; you know give it a chance. Although all the IM language and yuppie talk was a bit much, the message was pretty good. One thing that gets me though, and yes I know it's FICTION, BUT, who do you know that would spend $10,000 on having a little kids room duplicated at a vacation spot just so the kid can sleep peacefully? That was a bit over the top. What? You didn't read that part? Well, it was at the end of the book!!!
