This beginning is very intrigueing, I'm waiting with baited breath for Tuesday's excerpt.
I wonder who Elliot is?

I like the description of the Grandmother's appearance and I like her character. I don't yet feel to fond of the main character through whom we are seeing the grandmother. I will look forward to knowing more with the next chapter.

This is my first book club read and my first personal response as a written entry to having read a chapter of a book. I think I will like this process of reading with others.

One must learn to understand her past in order to know her future. In our culture, personal history is a subject that drives most Americans confusion and troublesome state of feelings. Almost everyone is afraid of the pain one's own history might bring. Without the past, the present will never be there -- much more the future.

Now I am fascinated, roped in. The writing descriptve really keeps my interest. Bassie is sophisticated, strong, intelligent, willful, respected in her own right. She has these shocking little stowaway pieces of herself hidden away to be wonderfully discovered, like the piece of matted hair stowed in a drawer for a practical future purpose. I feel safe with her character, her values, and her quest as she leads us with 'all the weight of her bones on her cane' and the driving tenacity of her own inner child who will not let go of her mother's dog's bones, I care and I want to know more....

I ordered the book from my library, just finished it, and was not disappointed. I could not have predicted the ending. Definitely will recommend this book to friends.
