Way Off the Road by William Geist Buy book: $15.56
Coming on the heels of Geist's 5,600-mile RV trip across America is a hilarious and compelling mix of stories along with some observations on his 20 years of life on the road.
Sounds like a winner - could use a little humour - don't expect it to be the same as "The Ride of our Lives" which was in the club a while back and I thoroughly enjoyed - but feel sure it will be enjoyable in its own way - one man's travels instead of a family reunion trip -
I love the idea.
I was in a small town many years ago. We rotated who would be in the parade: one year, we marched and the next year, we watched. And it was fun both ways.
Love it! I will get the book and read it all. I also believe it will make a good gift book for a family member or two--especially one who lives in Minneapolis who will enjoy the stand still parade.
I started reading this book with the daily "blurb" & it caught my interest right away, so I picked up a copy at the library. I've read a few chapters so far & they all are very interesting. Geist doesn't "overkill" a story; he gives just enough information so you know what's going on, adds the right amount of humor and interesting details. The chapters are short enough to read a story at one sitting. So far I've enjoyed the smallest stand-still parade and the plane-flying paperboy (who is 92 years old). I would strongly recommend this book to anyone desiring some good clean laughs and something light to get them thru a cold winter!
I just finished the last excerpt and I am definitely taking this book out of the library to read the rest. It reminds me somewhat of Bill Bryson's books as well as On the Road by Charles Kurault, Bill's roadie predecessor on Sunday Morning. I am also buying this book as a gift for a friend who will enjoy it.
I watch Bill Geist on Sunday mornings and I can hear his voice saying the words as I read, making it even funnier! Living in the hustle and bustle world of New York, I love the stories of people and places in other parts of the country who, I must confess, make me feel quite normal and boring!
So glad to see Mary and Doug mention Bill's Sunday Morning Segment. I've missed him since I've been back in Wy but watched religiously during my 7 years of caretaking Mother in Massachusetts. I'm a little behind in my Chapters but just read Friday's and thought sure Bill was going to 'find' Louis L'Amour's Old West Plan-tation. In one of his books he intended to build an Old West town right there at the 4-state junction. Thanks for reminding me to look it up. I can't wait to hustle back to my Chapters folder to read the beginning of Bill's Ways in one fell swoop... to get the rest at the Lib'y and anything else he has written. How I'd love to pack my cats and my Discover Gas card for a life on the less travelled roads...
Geist is as funny in print as he is on Sunday Morning. He finds and describes what few of us know about and does it without ever putting down his subjects. What a pleasure. I read his The Bif Five - Oh and it was equally well written.
I bought this silly book for my husband who happens to be from Wyzeta MN....doncha know?Bill Geist writes with the humor of Bill Bryson , another favorite humorous author. I needed a good laugh this week and this book certainly did supply it.
