You can find our culture's obsession with avoiding risk everywhere, from multiple insurance policies to crash-tested vehicles. But is ducking risk the most productive way for us to live? Surgeon and author Dr. Ben Carson, who faces risk on a daily basis, offers an inspiring message on how accepting risk can lead us to a higher purpose.

risk

This sounds like a very interesting book, and a good read for anyone like me who looks at how much of our precious paycheck is spent on insurance, extended warranties, etc. and how often we never received anything from these policies, because "well this covers everything but your problem." We didn't risk, we wanted safety, and we didn't get safety, we got more bills.

Quality of Life

April 8 2008, 9:58 AM

Reading today's excerpt I feel for these 2 women. They have been strong and brave to accomplish so much, and are looking for Quality of Life. Here is a chance, with a risk that they are willing to take. It is their risk, their lives. Yet no one else is willing to help them get there. The risk to the surgeons is to live with the possiblity of failure that someone died because of. I am glad there are physicians out there that do take these risks, [and family's that understand and don't sue when a difficult decision or procedure fails, and has a more than 50% chance of failure].
