Comfort Food - Chapter 1

September 22 2008, 12:26 PM

Just read the first segment of your book and think I will like it. I like novels revolving around cooking or baking. However, one thing stood out for me in the following paragraph:

"Let me fix a little something," Gus said to her daughters, their
friends, her colleagues, her viewers. She truly loved the idea of
taking care, of nurturing and nourishing. Especially those guests
who found it hard to make their way in the crowd: Gus always looked
out for "those ones" the most.

The words "those ones." I was was corrected by my teachers and in turn corrected my children in the use of this phrase - the word "ones" should be left off.
The correct way to make this statement should be: "Gus always looked out for those the most." I was surprised the editors let that slide.

Sorry, I have done a lot of proof-reading in my journalistic endeavors and these things just jump out at me. I do plan to finish the book however.

Thank you for sharing your book with us! Gus seems very real and interesting; I am finding the daily treats tantalizing, and I plan to read the whole novel! Thanks!

I know that feeling!

I really appreciate how you get into Gus' head about the issue of aging. At 43, I find myself thinking some of the same things she does. It takes my breath away to realize I am old enough to have kids in college rather than my preschooler and middle schooler. Somehow I have to figure out this aging gracefully thing. I look forward to seeing if Gus can teach me what to do...or what not to do!

I am also looking forward to how cooking crosses the generation gaps in this book. The best conversations, the most comfortable ones, that I have with my mom and my grandmother are centered around food.

Great story

This is a book that I know I want to finish. Gus and I have a lot in common and I commiserate with her feelings about approaching the BIG 5-0. She's successful but she has a vulnerable side that makes her interesting; I can't wait to see how it all turns out!

Worth reading

I have really enjoyed the sampling of this book, and will be looking for it in my local bookstore this wknd. I turned 50 last year, and it was as much a surprise to me as it was for this book's central character. Not upset - just not quite sure what it meant. This is something I don't often find discussed in literature, and deserves more attention. What happens when we are no longer "young" but not really (or perhaps unwilling to be) "old"? I'm beginning to realize it's a great opportunity for re-discovering aspects of myself that were shelved years ago. I'm learning that there's still plenty of living to do! Thanks!
