You know something, I went to East Kirkby today-I've spent the entire weekend in Lincolnshire with my partner and my 8yr old son. Glorious sunshine and fab museums etc...
East Kirkby, lovely museum-run with the best reason at heart, two boys who lost a dear brother and set up a brilliant place so that his memory, and that of those like him who never made it home would live on forever.
My son was so impressed, he met real veterans who fussed over him and signed things for him and he was so chuffed when one of them who he had spoken to waved just to him from the turret of the Lanc as it taxied.
We got chatting to this guy who recognized my partner from when he was doing Czech RAF at another event (he wasn't it kit today as it wasn't that kind of event) and do you know something I don't think he gave a S*** what people looked like age wise etc as long as they did it with good intentions and did it properly and respectfully and not to increase their own self importance.
Sorry to sound soppy, but when they whacked the engines on full and I watched that old chaps face in that tail section and I wouldn't want to have lived through a minute of what he had to live through in 1943 and I only hope that my son never has to-so without wishing to sound worthy, why can't we all just put 100% effort in for these lads and lasses who did it for real? Yes there are fat paratroopers and big ATA girls etc..but as long as they know their stuff and are passionate about what they do is it so bad?
