Both aircrew flying clothing cards I have in my collection show pistols (S&W .38's) were issued to said officer pilots - both prior to D-Day. I assume all officers were issued pistols as part of their stamdard equipment issue although perhaps someone else can be specific?
One of "my" chaps retained his pistol and having examined it myself, there are absolutely no markings denoting RAF issue whatsoever which surprised me. I have seen and heard of Colt 1911A1's with RAF/AM markings, all part of lend-lease and you occassionally see the twin mag pouches for the Colt's turn up too, although they are scarce. I'm led to believe that all sorts of oddments were sent across under lend-lease arrangements.
I have also seen and handled an SMLE 1907 patt bayonet that is AM marked, but that's the only one I've come across.
