Was this a factual event or is it just a good story? Several years ago I bought a type B helmet from this fellow which had apparently been saved in the same cleanout. I presume it's true but I find it hard to believe. The helmet was tagged with some convincing looking old cardboard swingtag as having belonged to a RAAF crewman who had been a guest of Stlg IVb. I researched his records and this fellow did exist and was indeed a POW but he had the smallest file I've ever seen at only 3 pages, which meant he remained a mystery man. The thing that made me a little suspicious about it was after comparing it to my other B's it was actually a Sth African type. Questions always remained why. I suppose it may have been picked up if he trained in Rhodesia under EATS but that didn't appear in the record.
It's long gone now but every time I see this old story I have to wonder would it really have happened.
