Response to D Mask Shaping
I took a leap of faith and gently began tweaking my D mask. As I wasn't hearing any undue cracking sounds, I carried on. Much to my surprise, the stiffener began to bend!
In the end I found I could actually shape it how I wanted!
Then, having built my confidence, I tried re-shaping an early made D-mask. That re-shaped too!
A WORD OF WARNING HERE: I'M NOT SUGGESTING EVERYONE TRIES THIS. If you have a D mask that has a stiffener that has deteriorated, such as the one Toine shows, I would leave well alone.
The masks I have are in very good condition.
It makes sense that the stiffener should be designed to shape to a wearer's face! But then a lot of what the Air Ministry did in terms of flying clothing didn't make sense either!
