Dickie of 601 squadron was kind enough to lend his copy Flying Swordsmen some years back... the official squadron history of 601 during the early war years.
The red silk linings and red socks to match (!?!) were pre-war and early war, not surviving much past B-o-B if I recall.
After that, 601 (not unlike 602 AAF, our particular focus) became much as any RAF squadron with postings in-and-out of various personnel with none of the territorial attachments of the original pre-war squadron.
I am sure some traditions continued, but I doubt red silk linings was one of them.
It is a GREAT read if you find the rare copy.
