It always seems to rub off that way.
It's the glamour of the (RAF) pilot that people want to be a part of, so they buy the same (or similar) goodies.
It's the same now: people are after the RAF Mk3 jacket exactly because it's a RAF jacket. And for you it's the same: would you be after the boots if they weren't RAF?
I fly with the 1936 patterns because they're RAF and to me represent something way more than just boots. They're not uncomfy or anything, but truth be told, they're a bit overkill for the aeroplanes I fly
Having said that, I think the motorcycle community were after these because, next to being RAF, they were warm, comfy and protected the wearer. And that's the clientele Lewis was after as well.
