Response to RCAF Steel Helmet Color and Texture
I have two Id'd RCAF/RAF helmets. The 1st is Id'd to pilot R.A. Innes, who flew with 253 Squadron during the BOB. I obtained this helmet directly from his son. Interestingly the chin strap is inked to Mrs. R.A. Innes. The son told me it was his father's helmet and when his mother joined the WAAFs his father gave it to his mother for her use. The helmet is dated 1939 and the exterior is painted grey, not blue/gray as you correctly mention. With the exception of the name INNES painted in the same color grey, the underside is in it's original Army issue greenish/grey color. The exterior of the helmet is NOT textured.
The 2nd helmet was given to me by RCAF pilot Don Vickers. Sadly my friend Don passed away this past July at age 89. His helmet, as issued to him,is in it's original Army issue color and was not repainted grey. I can find no date stamp on this helmet. It also is NOT textured.
I am not a helmet "expert" so what I have mentioned here is from actual observation and may not be what was typical or regulation. Hope this helps you.
