Did the '39 Pattern flying boot ever come with blackened canvas tops? I have seen two pairs recently with blackened tops, both as if someone has taken boot polish to them to make them look more like '36 Pattern boots. But one I know of for sale says they are 'rare' types, made like that.
Alex, I know the site, and without being rude to the owners (who have done a sterling job with starting and relocating their business) I find many of the descriptions quite OTT, and the prices quite extravagent. I think one can only take items like this with a pinch of salt, but IMHO they are just a pair which have had the canvas blackened or they were just made that way (maybe due to the manufacturer?) I'm not sure, I think it's purely speculative, but I'd be interested to hear any other input.
Ben, I totally agree with you on the descriptions and prices, although that wasnt the site I meant! I dont believe black topped were made, but Flying gear isnt my strong point, hence the question. What a thing to do to a nice pair of '39 boots!
It could be that they both came from the same chap who decided to blacken them for reasons best known to himself or, more likely and more unfortunately, a costumer who decided they weren't too booty enough
