I'd go, if I did the research and felt safe. My brother went to Cancun (I think) not too long ago and said it was great.
My boss went on a cruise that stopped someplace in Mexico, spent 5 minutes on land and literally ran back to the ship because it was effing scary. I've heard about whole groups of tourists getting robbed at gunpoint on cruise shore hikes.
