Hi, if you're reading this it is most likely because you asked:
How do I post a picture by my name? or
How do I post a picture in a post?
Two of the most commonly asked questions by newbies. Before we give you the answer to these questions, please follow these instructions: read this entire thread before posting any further!
First, if you wish to post a photo you have to get an account. Once you have an account, log in and follow this link: http://www.network54.com/Login/
Notice that the "My resources" tab is highlighted. Probably this will be the only tab of interest to you, and managing your account. Click on "edit" over to the top right or follow this link http://www.network54.com/Login/Account/Edit. This leads you to all the options and settings you can adjust.
Click on Personal Photo to upload a photo which will appear alongside your screen name. Note: this is called an "avatar". Your screen name is called a "moniker". Your actual login name… well, I don't know if that has a name. But you don't have to post a moniker that agrees with your login name. As a general rule it is not recommended to post a picture of yourself as an avatar unless you don't mind that it can be downloaded by anyone and abused.
Okay, don't post yet, but when you do, you will see several things (hit post). First, you can login if you haven't already. Second is the line for your name, or moniker. Choose a name and stick with it so that people can identify you. Third is the line for your email. You can leave this blank. However, should you wish to communicate with other members of the bored and allow them to communicate with you, we recommend you take out an expendable type email address that does not reveal your identity (say from hotmail or yahoo) and use that address for all posts. Fourth, message title. This is also optional. And finally comes the text… type away, newbie!
Notice the little button that says "insert object". This allows you to insert a picture into your post. To do so, say from your hard drive, your folders must be named so that they do not have any spaces or illegal characters in them. Here is the procedure:
1. click Insert Object
2. click on temporary files
3. click upload
4. click browse
5. browse hard drive and select image file you want (.gif or .jpg), then click okay
6. click upload button which is partially hidden
7. click "insert link"
8. you are done
There is a handy "preview" feature to posting to let you think about your post (and make sure images appear right) before posting.
That answers the two basic questions all newbies invariably ask.
As for the rest… we'll let seasoned veterans of the bored explain the rules. Read this whole post before proceeding.
After asking basic type questions the first experience most newbies have of the bored is that people here are snarky and backbiting. This impression is incorrect because you are new and don't know anyone's personality yet. Also, being new you are likely to say too little, resulting in no one responding to you, or too much, resulting in people voicing their opinions right back at you. The suggested method of entry is to read the bored for a month or so until you get a basic feel for people's personalities and then dip your toes in gently as you start posting. However, other prefer the trial by fire approach, and jump in all guns blazing. Either way, expect some turbulence as you join the bored members and fasten your seatbelts if you have any.
Other than that I can only offer this general advice:
1. Appalled is always right. Listen to her.
2. Be congenial. Try not to start off by picking fights.
3. Be alert about anonymous posters. They spot newbies like sharks to swimmers. Anons like to harass newbies in attempts to ruffle them. Just ignore that and pay attention to people who consistently use a certain moniker. Anon also refers to poster that use ANY name which can also be names specifically chosen to upset you. If it doesn't have a login name associated with it, it is usually an anon. A newbie's perspective is usually that it is the regular bored members who are doing this; but it is not.
4. If something said on the bored can be taken both in a good way and a bad way… take it the good way.
5. Enjoy the Odd Todd TV Board!
Notice to the Elders (and anyone else):
Please try to post only useful advice opinions here that will help newbies with their birth into this new world. Also, please bookmark this thread for future reference to give the link to a newbie who needs it.
I did not bother to discuss matters concerning Etiquette, Terminology and other things because y'all know more about that than I.
Here are a couple of terms you might see that are grammatically incorrect on purpose. Most have become that way due to an ongoing joke and may not make sense at first... but just run with it.
Cliche in place of Clique (as in the "in-crowd") Bored in place of Board (as in TV Board)
There are reasons behind these, but just like any good on-going jokes, you had to be there.
Please note that is the last time I will refer to you using that term.
The instructions for posting avatars and pictures are helpful, do make use of them and try to avoid askiing how to do something everyone else has figured out. It makes no difference to me, but the old timey types will prop themselves up by ragging on you. Mostly they do it anonymously since they are lacking in balls.
Anyway, the rest of my advice sort of goes in another direction.
Go ahead and pick fight if you like. If you see someone (including me) making a statement you find bogus, call them on it. There's waay too much boot licking going on, so a new perspective is more than welcome.
Don't trust anything posted by "Appalled". You can dig up the history there if you like. (just don't feel the need to bump it to the top of the board.)
Finally, DO have fun. I have fun everytime I open a thread, and it's getting better all the time.
Getting under your skin is not one of my goals, you're not worthy of such energy from me. You just keeping thinking you're the new sheriff in town, it's slightly amusing, but mostly boring.
This thread is for informational purposes for newbies only. Please move all discussion of what should or should not be posted here to the Newbie Discussion forum, where you can continue your arguments there if you like:
unfortunately, from all i've gathered about how to do this... you must cut&paste the direct path to the source of music you've found on the web to add sound to a thread.
when you do this... the url does not appear and no one knows you posted music except that they hear it when they open the thread.
this also works with movie files (.mpeg). adding the direct url to a .mpeg will insert a little Windows Media Player toolbar and the movie will start playing as soon as the thread opens.
however, it is somewhat difficult to link directly to sounds and movies because usually they pop up off some other website and you don't know the url path.
therefore, those who maintain their own websites have a distinct advantage because they can store songs and movies on their websites and link to them using the url that locates those files.
if anyone has more info about this please post it.
Ok, that newbie thing is great, but i had pretty much gotten that far on my own. I am confused on the picture thing b/c it says "notice the insert object button," and i don't. That's what I've been looking for all along and I don't see it...i feel like I'm taking crazy pills, here.
Never get drunk in two states inside the same bar...
...there is no insert object button when I use Mozilla, but I can use my formatted text signature. When I use IE, I can use the insert object button, but not the formatted text signature. So obviously N54 cooperates with some browsers better than others.
Yeah, I am using Mozilla. maybe i'll try IE--i wish it had the Ctrl+t function that Mozilla has, though. I like those tabs...i am using them right now.
Never get drunk in two states inside the same bar...
I can't find the three laws postings. Search on N54 sucks and I ran out of interest.
From memory they are:
1) No Personal Information Sharing: Don't post personal information about other posters you learn from sources off the board. They better have intentionally shared it here, and you can find a thread clearly showing they did logged in as themselves before you do it. This one tOdd actually bans people for, including himself.
2) No impersonation: Do not pretend to be other existing posters and post things as if you are them.
3) Don't be a dick: tOdd is the final arbiter on what qualifies as being a dick. This one has been expanded with the new powers given to many long-time board folks - so there are broader interpretations now. So far Appy's the only one complaining.
Just thought it'd be helpful.

Well, the old "insert object" uploader is gone because someone had to occasionally clear the file cache for it once it got used too often
And now we pretty much use the file links from hosting sites.
Besides, the uploader had a short time limit and usually dumped your pic when the cache was cleared.
NOW we need the knowledge from the all-knowing on how to post embeds of videos.
YouTube was into changing that up on occasion just to fuck with us, I believe.
They also have a propensity of shutting down a video, once we have too much fun with it,
and list it as being deleted due to copyrights or some other malarkey.
So how do we currently have to cut up the embed code to make it work.......as far as the recent scheme goes?
Everybody..Have fun tonight.
Everybody.....Wang Chung tonight.....
Embed code: this embed is for a live performance
I like this live one now that I find where to find the "old greg embed code".

You're a sweetie. Totally not necessary. I actually enjoy seeing it. But I NEVER noticed it until that day some Anon mentioned it, and now I feel like Jim Carrey in "23."
ETA Was it an Anon, or was it ED?

The 'old embed' code was throwing me off because it doesn't work in the post preview. Made me think it wasn't working at all. When you actually post it, though, it works just fine.
I don't have any trouble with the 'insert object' thing. I use IE. used to be version seven, but it updated in the middle of the night a couple weeks ago. Either way, it works for me.
